Wanted - a back-gear (65t?) for an ML7
« on: August 15, 2017, 06:23:32 PM »
I know this is a bit of a forlorne hope, but a friend of mine in South Africa has just got a Myforld ML7 which seems to have had very little use and is in excellent condition in most respects, but the back-geat has a missing tooth. I wondered if anyone might have a spare one (gear, not tooth!) that could be sold to a good cause?

Thanks chaps, but the gear he needs is the 65t back gear from the main spindle, not the 56t cluster or the 65t changewheel.

Indeed! Is it possible to swap in sets of gears from one of the other myfords? If not it looks like we're down to the sort of thing my grandad used to do in the south-china sea - file a rebate, braze in a piece of silver steel and then file it to shape (or as he has the time and is not worried about japanese subs more likely spending hours carefully registering it in a dividing head so that the relevant cutter can be used to reprofile the tooth).

My grandfather said he only did this the once, on HMAS Junee when he was her Chief Engineer and the shock form a near-miss detination of misbehaving american torpedo took four teeth off some vital timing gears. The actual gearwheel in question was mounted on a wooden block on his mantlepiece in Perth until he died. But I digress!

Not easily
You would need a new cluster and a new cone pulley ( the engagement device is different ) and maybe a new shaft for the cluster ( they are not all the same length )

If I were you drop Tony at lathes.co.uk a email

He may know of a resource for a replacement

Thought I had struck gold but alas OS
