Hello from South Dakota
« on: August 15, 2017, 01:19:09 PM »
Hello, new member from SE South Dakota. I have a PM 1236 lathe & a Grizzly G0755 mill with DRO. I've worked as a machinist since high school. Since retirement ive become interested in model engines. I've built a couple of Tubalcains engines. I just finished a PM Research #2 kit. I think a simple IC engine is the next adventure. Suggestions welcomed.
I'm also an avid motorcycle adventure rider. Having ridden 49 states & mostly off pavement from Canada to Mexico.

Hello Sleddog and welcome to MEM.

I was working at Ellsworth AFB back in the 60's when the Cuban Crisis occurred.

Hi there and welcome.  Lets run through a few things.

1) You are American
2) You are a trained machinist with an interest in making models.
3) You are thinking that your next model should be an IC engine.
4) You are fond of motorbikes and riding them.
5) Project should be achievable for someone new to model making.

I am thinking that you should at least check out the Hoglet design to see if it would interest you as it would seem to fulfill the above.

Welcome Sleddog :)
Here is a link to a download link to a good first IC engine  Webster Engine

Do you attend Western MN Steam Threshers show? I'm from a little north west of you about 100 miles north of Aberdeen SD.

Hi Sleddog and welcome to the forum from the UK. I can thoroughly endorse Doc's recommendation of the Webster as a nice straightforward first I/C engine project.
Several forum members have built them and will be only too happy to answer any questions that you have.

Sleddog, glad to have you along. It's a great bunch here. They have prodded me along in this great hobby and I'm ticked over every engine they have helped me build and every dollar on tools they have caused me to spend  :lolb:. From the sounds of your motorcycle addiction, our own George Britnell sounds like a guy that's on "your page". Welcome

No, I haven't. I was planning to attend the show in Rapid City but there is a conflict with the dates of another event.

Sleddog,
I caught your intro this morning at work but didn't feel comfortable replying till I got home. Welcome to the forum, I think You will find all the help, advise, and encouragement you could desire here. :) Since my first IC engine was based on an article in Strictly Internal Combustion magazine I will make a plug here for SIC here. Back issues are still published here at http://www.strictlyic.com/
My first engine was Hamilton Upshur's vertical single. Unfortunately I haven't sorted out all the 3rd party photo issues or I'd have a photo dangling here to entice you. I used material I had in stock and improved it in places I felt were obvious. I used a 3 piece crankcase with ball bearings and gave it much more cooling. It will spin 7500 rpm on a good day. Today it is much like this but for the muffler which it blew off, granted if you built it as published in issues 63-66 it would run at a more sedate pace.

Some of the engines that were thrown out earlier are also great suggestions. Webster, Hoglet,  I think you will find us a helpful bunch with diverse experiences and preferences, feel free to pick through, and ask for the info you need. By the way I'll make a plug for the Badger Steam and Gas show in Baraboo WI. this weekend and I will be there Friday & Saturday with my Upshur single and Val.
