Help requested--need replacement for Photobucket
« on: July 09, 2017, 03:48:34 PM »
Okay, People--Please help me out. What photo hosting site is going to let me host pictures on third party systems and will actually display the pictures in the post, not just the link. Now that Photobucket has bit the dust, I need an alternative. Image shack and "Imgur" definitely will host the pictures, but I want something very much like Photobucket that will display a picture in my post, not just a link. I don't mind paying up to $50 a year for this .---Brian

Brian, I just replaced a couple of defunct PB pictures in one of my posts with links to images hosted on imgur, worked fine.  I used the "BBCode (forums)" share link.

I have gone over to Ade's Coppermine for my image hosting.
It works well, a whole lot easier and smoother than PB.

I think I have it figured out using Image shack. They have a one year special on right now for $38.00, and you can register for one month for free. However, if you don't sign up for a paid account after the one month, your pictures get wiped.

All my images are simply stored in my Google drive/photos - The only one I have problems with are the ones taken on my phone and I think that is about where it is stored within drive

Hi,

I see a lot of postings relating to Photobucket issues but must admit I'm a bit confused about it all. I also use PB to host the images I post here, I don't pay any subscription but as far as I'm aware my images appear to other readers (they do to me when I create a posting).

I find PB is slow to upload sometimes but from what I can see it seems to work ok ?

I feel like I'm not understanding something here ?

It is not affecting all users at the moment but no doubt will over time.

I'm not 100% sure how PB monitor your use but reading something earlier it may be that if you copy the IMG tab to get your link it will pick that up. If you copy the direct link and use the forum to give the IMG and paste your link between the two it may not register the use.

It is slow for you as non paying users have to wait for all the adverts to load, paying users don't get adverts so much quicker.

I pay $30 a year and know my images will be OK until 31st dec 2018, after that I don't know and they may have changed their costings by then anyway

I just tried it and it worked for a pix on HSM . Another  over there did it after my post also.
So it looks OK for now at least

Thanks.

I copy the direct link then paste it between the [IMG] entry - to be honest that's the only way I know  :)

Is Flickr compatible with this forum? - I use it to store a lot of my photos and would use it to display images here if I knew how to do it.

PB (or any service provider can see the traffic that comes from their servers, and they can tell where the request came from.  If it didn't come from their server, then they know it is a 3rd party.  So the look at who's picture it is and say "these guys are using us for 3rd party hosting.  We don't like that because we don't get any ad revenue from them and it still costs us money for the servers."  So they shut us all down unless we give them money (presumably to make up for the lost ad revenue).

So, why are you guys NOT interested in using the hosting method that Ade has provided?  It works quite well and is very fast.  And you have been assured that you maintain the rights to your own images.

To me, the arguments for it is that the photos are likely to stay around as long as the forum.  And any other choice you make will be subject to the whims of the company providing the service.  I would be especially worried about it if its free.

I'm just curious.
Thanks,
Kim

Kim, I have just not had time to check out Ade's service, I do plan to do so soon though. I doubt I'll go back and switch over all my past posts to it, I had converted everything to postimage just as his posts came out, and that was enough for a while.

As I use my images on several forums I would either have to load them onto each one or feel guilty about using someone elses space to host what I'm using on other forums which would happen if I copied and pasted a post made here onto another forum as I do now.

I'll also use an old image from a build thread to illustrate something about a method elsewhere, having to hunt around several forums to locate that image would not be ideal. Prefer to have them all in one place and all automatically resized as I upload them to that place.

Jason,

Our host allows us 3 terabytes (3,000GB) of free transfer a month at the current hosting level.  So far this month, we've used 52GB (that includes other stuff, not just MEM). I really don't have a problem with you using the LEF Coppermine gallery & putting your pictures in other forums - even HMEM if you want.

Cheers!

from what I understand about Postimage, if you pay for your site, the photos stay untouched for ever, the free site, if your photos are not used within 6 months they will be dropped (so look in every now and then, and maybe post on more than one site.
I don't have a problem with free PB at the moment as I only have about 20 photos up to go on another site, and my photos are still there (touch wood).

Hi Ian,

I dont think that is correct. Postimage is a free service, there is no paid version of it, and the images dont go away based on inactivity. Here is a snippet from their FAQ:
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
How long will images remain on the server?

You can upload unlimited images per post and you will never have to worry about your images being removed due to inactivity.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
This is assuming there is not more than one Postimage - I am using www.Postimage.org website.

After saying a couple of days ago I was having no probs with PB I've now had an email saying they will discontinue host my images for 3rd party users unless I subscribe, I'd happily pay a small fee but to host a handful of new images each month I can't justify paying a lot   :(

Does anyone know if my old images will be affected or just new ones ?

Looks like the way forward is to try Coppermine  :)

Admins/Moderators is allowing users to edit their own posts something that can be enabled?

Or use the "Modify" link in the top right of your post.  Either one will let you edit your post.  But the upper one (labeled Modify) gives you the "Preview" option.  The icon only link at the bottom right lets you modify your post in place, but it doesn't give you the "Preview" option.

The icon isn't there when you show your own posts, which I was using to see which of my posts needed amending. However, if the thread is opened the icon is there. When I get some time I'll look at doing the updates

I'm a little worried about you guys using Imgur.  Have you guys read their terms?  It says this in there:

... Also, don't use Imgur to host image libraries you link to from elsewhere, content for your website, advertising, avatars, or anything else that turns us into your content delivery network. If you do – and we will be the judge – or if you do anything illegal, in addition to any other legal rights we may have, we will ban you along with the site you're hotlinking from, delete all your images, report you to the authorities if necessary, and prevent you from viewing any images hosted on Imgur.com. We mean it.

While it may not happen now, it has the potential of happening, just like it did with PhotoBucket.  I worry you'll be in the same place again.

Why not consider using the excellent image hosting that Ade has provided?

No one has mentioned One Drive.  5 gigs free. You can set permissions on what you want to share or keep private. Works seamlessly with windows . Generates the url to share. I use it because I have a windows phone and my photos automatically upload, but it is a viable FREE option for all of us.

Hi,
I am about fit to be tied.  :cussing: I have tried coppermine, and when I click download it loads stuff but no obvious way to use it or even load it to use. just a bunch of gibberish files. Registered on use.com and now imagur both allow me to load the photo but no usable link to MEM. The best I got was on use.com one link gave a link to click on that took you to use.com. Does anyone have any help, am I doing something wrong. Did I get used to PB & can't figure anything else out?

Hi Art,

You should be able to get the links from Coppermine by using the Right Click menu.  In Chrome, the exact name of the selection is "Copy image address". In Internet Explorer the menu item is simply called "Copy".

The steps you'd use are:
  • Upload your image to Coppermine
  • Hover over the picture you want to use
  • 'Right click' and select the option to copy the image address
  • Then Paste that URL into your post between thw [ img] [ /img] tags like usual

The link that you paste from Coppermine should look like one of these:
http://lister-engine.com/coppermine/albums/userpics/10008/thumb_039a-Crank-02-DSC_3076.JPG    - Thumbnail sized version
http://lister-engine.com/coppermine/albums/userpics/10008/normal_039a-Crank-02-DSC_3076.JPG   - Medium sized version
http://lister-engine.com/coppermine/albums/userpics/10008/039a-Crank-02-DSC_3076.JPG                 - Full sized version

Of course, the number and picture name will be different, but the first part of the URL should be the same (up through userpics at least).  Youll notice the "thumb_" and "normal_" prefix on the picture name above?  If you want to link to the full sized picture you uploaded (hopefully something in the 800x600 range in size) you can just delete the "thumb_" or 'normal_" part of the link.  Otherwise you'll get the Thumbnail image (really small), or the slightly bigger version (called normal) but still not the exact size you uploaded.

Give it a try and see if it works for you.

Kim,
Sorry you misunderstood me, or I was not clear. When I go to the coppermine.sourceforge.net website I download a zip file titled, cpg1.5.46zip. Which when I double click on it opens cpg15x and double clicking on that gives me an index with files starting with, albums then bridge, about 20 or so .php files interspersed with .txt files ending with zipdownload.php nothing is installed.  needless to say I didn't get far in the tutorial cause I had to start over every time I left it. I use SeaMonkey as my browser but Chrome or IE don't make any difference. If I could even get to the point where your explanation starts I'm sure it would be self explanatory. Am I downloading the wrong file? If so what should It be titled. I never had so much trouble and can usually figure it out but this defies logic.
On use.com this is the best I can accomplish.[/URL]

Don't even get me started on the tutorial for internet explorer that you cant pause while you try to figure out how to do something in a program I don't use.
This is the only way I can get it to point to any image. What the :cussing: am I doing wrong. :)

Yes, Art, you're right!  I completely mis-understood your issue!

Jim is correct.  I was refering to the Coppermine server that Ade has already setup.  You don't need to download any software, or install anything.  Just go to the link that Jim provided.

Actually, you should make sure and read the original post from Ade on this: http://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,7249.0.html

He gives the link, and provides instructions on how to get the password (PM him, or one of the other admins and they'll send it to you). Then you can setup an account on the image server.

After that, you can setup a gallery, upload your photos (you'll need flash installed to use the bulk uploader - and its well worth doing that!), THEN you can follow the instructions I was giving.

I can see the confusion here if you haven't seen Ade's original email!  :-\

Hope you can make it work!  I have found it to be a rock solid system so far (and I've uploaded quite a few photos!)
