Hello to all
« on: June 11, 2017, 08:10:47 PM »
I am an amateur machinist and I am just getting interested in building an IC Engine.  I have plans for the Upshur Vertical Single Engine and the Farm Engine.  I'm not nearly ready to start on the farm engine!

I found this website while looking for gear cutting information.

I think I will really like reading and studying the information here.

 :hi: Mow,

Have you made any model engines so far?

Jo - I've made a few steam engines before.  Nothing elaborate by any means.  I know the ICs are a little more temperamental but I feel the need to try an IC engine.  I ordered the Farm Engine plans when I ordered the Vertical engine plans more out of curiosity than to build from.  I go to antique tractor shows where there are full sized hit and miss engines and I love watching them run.

Who knows? I may attempt it one day but I know that I'm not ready for that yet!   :-[ :-[

Welcome to MEM mow. Just remember that all of us have been just where you are now. Skills come from doing and making mistakes along the way as we all do. We are here to help in any way we can.

Thanks Bill... Mistakes and I go hand in hand!! :-\   :-[
A lot to learn but I have learned a lot just looking at the jigs and projects built by y'all that have been here awhile.

I'm sure I'll need some help along the way!

Hi Mow and welcome!.

As Bill said, we all had to start somewhere. The only way to know that you've learned how is to do. I'm part way through my first IC engine and learning a lot - and I've had a workshop for 30+ years...

There are a lot of very knowledgeable and helpful people on MEM.

Glad to meet you, mow.  Welcome aboard.  The Upshur farm engine was my first IC engine.  I was just starting out and found it relatively straightforward to make and very forgiving of my mistakes.  And as others have said, lots of helpful people here if you need advice or questions answered.

Regards,
Rudy

Thanks to all for the welcome!

One of the things I worried about when thinking about building the Upshur was the timing gears. I wanted to make my own but didn't know where to start.  But a web search took me to Don1966's Excell posts on this forum and that cleared up a lot questions about making my own gears.  And I was able to find other posts here about making a hob and more importantly, using it to cut the gears.  So that's how I got to this forum and almost immediately joined.

I will need help along the way but I know I can get help here!  :)

Thanks again

mow
