Chuck fittings - small bench lathes.
« on: June 12, 2017, 05:24:42 PM »
Hi all

I've decided to treat myself to a lathe upgrade and placed a deposit on a Chester DB10 although it will probably be another month or so before I take delivery.

My query concerns the chuck fitting which is different to my DB8 lathe where the chuck bolts on from behind, it seems like the DB10 has some kind of geared ring behind the chuck.

Can anyone please shed any light on what sort of fitting it is ?

If it helps the chuck can be seen here after zooming in :-

Thanks
Peter

Lance, the gear ring is something is something to do with the way the chuck attaches - although I'm not entirely certain how the mechanism operates or what it is called.

it looks similar to that fitted to my  Prazimat.... http://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,6833.msg145111.html#msg145111  ;)

But I would check.

The nuts stay on the studs in the back of the chuck and pass through large clearance holes in the spindle flange.

The ring with the knurled edge has three "keyhole" shaped slots in it.

Chuck nuts pass through the large part of the keyhole, you then turn it slightly so the nuts are over the narrow part and then just tighten up the three nuts

saves having to faff about with loose nuts and washers.

EDIT
 Jo beat me to it

Thanks Jo /Jason, that kinda makes sense :-)

It's got to be an improvement on the fiddly arrangement I'm used to that is a big disincentive to swap chucks unless it's essential.
