Lathe DRO
« on: June 04, 2017, 02:38:16 PM »
Having finished my Corliss I decided to move into the 21st century and fit a DRO scale to my myford lathe.

Decided to just do the Z axis for now so purchased the 600 mm scale from Arceurotrade, after fitting I was curious as to
the accuracy, so tested it with a DTI over 1 inch of travel. According to the DTI the DRO scale was less than .001 under
and my lead screw hand wheel was .002 over, which surprised me, it would be interesting to know which is right.

I would like to use the bluetooth and tablet option and have contacted Yuri's toys 3 times over the last 2 weeks to see if he
ships to UK and what cost the is, but have had no replies.

Does anyone know if he does, or of a UK based alternative, I'm quite happy to buy it in kit form but would prefer it to work with Yuri's App.

On the web site's forum there is a post from late last year about a user in UK. Your customs people charge duty plus the usual markups apparently. I know from experience that they include the cost of shipping in their calculations to ensure that they get the most out of you (a parcel we sent to NI doubled in price due to this because we shipped by courier!!!)
You can likely go through the purchase steps and stop just before committing, that should give you shipping costs.

Thanks Gerrit, I found that on the forum and it does indeed look as though it could double in price.

I did try going through the purchase steps, but as soon as I placed it in my basket it went straight
to my Paypal account for me to sign in, so I opted out.

I built Yuris reader for my mate Rich to use on his mill and it works brilliantly. I cut the board with my cnc mill to make it repeatable but at the moment cannot find the file to do it again!! Some repeatability!!!!!!
I made two for rich but one has failed due to a soldering fault. I have some more to make and these are on my ever-extending to do list. They really need to move up the list.
Rich has fitted a dro to his myford 7 and will use one of the new boxes on it when I have built them.
Not sure which topic it appears on but I am sure he will jump on and tell you.

Yuri has now abandoned the reader based on the Arduino boards and has opted to concentrate on the more expensive alternates. I have stayed with arduino. Build your own board as UK customs will screw you on duty.

Rich replied before me.

Hi Rich & Julian,

Thanks for the replies, it was your original post Rich which started me off, so I have already studied it closely!

I've fitted the scale to the "Z" axis on my Myford 7 and am just scheming ways of doing the cross slide so would love to see some pictures of yours.

I would really prefer to build my own controller, and although I have done some electronics work on veroboard for my son's GCSE project, I really need
an idiots guide as I certainly no electronics engineer.

Rich needs three and I need two so perhaps these will move to top of to do list this week. If it happens I can always CNC extras.

Hi Julian,

That's great, I might even now start discussions with my financial controller to see if I can raid the piggy bank to do my mill as well!

Hi Les,
Have fitted chinese scales and toutch DRO on my mini lathe a while ago, the reader is my own design, the log is here http://madmodder.net/index.php/topic,10298.msg116311.html#msg116311.
If anyone is interested I could post the files for the circuit board.

Cheers
Abraham

Neatest way I have seen to fit a scale is to use the small magnetic ones from EMS which can be fitted into a milled pocket on the underside of the cross slide. Myfords now fit their machines with this.

Hi Abraham,

Wow! that looks a lovely job you've done there, a bit too complicated for me I think. Thanks for the info anyway, very interesting.

Jason, have just contacted EMS-i and they emailed me all the literature and PRICES, as you say a really neat setup, but out of my league at the moment.

Hi Les,

Have you take a look at this?
http://www.caliper2pc.de/en_index.html
I have installed it on my mill.
Also have installed on my dividing head.
I am very pleased with it and you can expand it in time.

Well that was easier than I thought, it's the MSP430 LaunchPad Basic DRO Controller which seems to work fine
with the Chinese scales from Arceurotrade.

Below is a picture showing a readout after 5 inches of travel of the carriage using the handwheel!

Even the software and flashing the chip was not as bad as I thought it might be.

Arduino works well with the scales from arc. I have now found my files and made some readers for Rich. Have now redrawn the board so it is the same size as the Arduino Uno board.

Barneydog,
Are you making boards available for others?
I'd be interested in one.
