New base for the Little Brother
« on: June 04, 2017, 01:21:43 AM »
I got a new base for the Little Brother I made.  I wanted something solid!

That looks very solid indeed John!  Would love to see some more and closer up pictures of it if you have a chance to do so. This one is very near if not at the top of my build list. Is that one of Roy Sholl's poplar boxes there on the back end of the base?

Here is a link of it running, the Little Brother, not the base.  I have been messing around with it trying to get it to run slow.  I have it down to 850-900 rpm at the moment.

And yes it is a Roy Sholl box.  I absolutely suck at working with that brown stuff!

Nice running engine John and the base looks nice. I liked that overhead shot in the video where it showed the governor doing what it does. I still think this "hit and miss" thing is a bit of "black magic"!

Jim:  Thanks, and hit and miss was a bit of a mystery to me until I built it.  Now it seems pretty darned simple.

Achim: Thanks.  I have it sitting on my desk and start it up and run it for a few minutes frequently. I just can't bring myself to take it apart to give it a proper finish and paint it.  Maybe next winter, Maybe.

It's funny how that works. I'm about half way through my P & W build and the whole hit and miss thing is starting to gradually make more sense.

Nice job John, is it my old hearing or does the engine "double" fire every once in a while?

Jim:  By the time you are finished you will be scratching your head wondering how you didn't understand it before!

Thomas: Yes, your old ears are still working fine.  I am not sure why it is firing once sometimes and twice other times.  I think it might be right on the edge of getting back up to speed with one firing and needs a second to hit latching speed? Just guessing here.  I found the toughest part of getting this to run was getting all the springs working happily together.  Can't tell you how many springs I made.  All part of the frustration fun!

Nice video. Excellent engine and sound! Adds to my incentive to build one some day.
