My TINY finished
« on: May 29, 2017, 06:21:27 PM »
Well I am calling this one finished for the most part. There may be some more fiddling and tweaking, but it runs thankfully (I have enough paperweights already!!). Thanks to all of you who followed along on the build and offered your suggestions and support. Below are some photos of the finished engine. Most are self explanatory and a few have objects or my hand in the for size comparison. The only comments I will make are for photo 7, showing the two lights on the wooden base under the on/off switch. The left hand light is for power on, the one on the right if the timing light...when it comes on the hall effect sensor is turned on as the magnet comes closer to it. When it goes off, the high voltage is sent to the spark plug. Since the magnet holder is mounted to the crankshaft, this becomes a waste spark arrangement, firing again on the exhaust stroke but this causes no problems. The last picture shows the position of the crankpin when this happens. While I didn't measure it directly I would guess its somewhere around 15 degrees before TDC. This is where the engine seemed to be happiest. Video will follow in a separate post.

Thanks!!  It does feel good to see them finally come to life...have to say though, this one put up a good fight these last few days. Sometimes I think there is a bit of black magic and luck to it, but I'm pretty happy at the moment. It's going to be even more relaxing to sit back and watch Bob and Dave finish up theirs now.

Outstanding job Bill! Myself I think being able to build something this small and have it run as well as yours is quite an accomplishment. You know there's always the drawings for the vertical! :cartwheel:

Thanks everyone for the kind words. It was a fun project. One if these days I may make Arv's original water cooled version, or the vertical. Several other things on the build list first though, including finishing up the P&W.  Like someone's signature line says...too many projects, too little time

Speaking of that Bob, I will be with you till yours is running too.

Thanks Dave. Now I can sit back and watch you

Cletus, you know me well, flywheel runout drives me nuts.  The one on the governor side is ever so slightly non-concentric but its not that noticeable and doesn't bother me nearly as much as side to side runout.

Hi Bill,
The first Tiny I built I could never get to start by hand so I made a tiny ( no pun intended) V groove pulley and mounted onto the offside flywheel. I would wrap a short piece of string around it like the old pull start lawn mowers and give it a quick pull. It started every time and I didn't need the battery and airplane starter motor.

Thanks for that info. George. I may just give that a try. The 12V lead acid battery and the airplane starter motor are about 5 times the size of the Tiny and about 10 times the weight. Even so it was just the trick during the process of getting Tiny running well, so thanks also for that earlier suggestion.

Steve, thanks for the kind words and for following along.

Fantastic Bill.  Runs great!

As usual....... I've really enjoyed your build thread and learned tons.

If you get a chance, and feel like it, I'd really enjoy hearing how your new Cowells worked into the project vs the Sherline lathe.

Yes, get back to work on your P & W!  That might get me moving forward on mine again.

Something larger, hmmm.... A locomotive? Large traction engine? Steam powered lawnmower? Hey, that would be fun! Although the coal ash might set the clippings on fire in dry weather...
