1/4 scale Reid Gas Engine
« on: April 08, 2017, 02:54:02 AM »
I got around to finish an old project a 1/4 scale Reid gas engine it's number 122 ,it's built from castings supplied by Burns and Horner . I had to take a break from the Coles' Corliss as the governor is driving me nuts .
I started this engine in 1996 and for many years it sat on the shelf because work and illness got in the way .
When finished it will have a clutch and power , which are machined ready to install .Jeff

Thank you Nick , the casting required a lot of grinding and hi fill primer, the color is darker in person the photo shows it somewhat lighter  it's 1980 Chevrolet truck Dark Carmine.Jeff

I have heard that this engine is cantankerous , but I suppose any gas or gasoline engine scaled down is , I'm open to any suggestions .
I made a few changes on this engine one was to make the main valve like the original , this was suggested from a builder some 20 years ago , I'll post a photo .Jeff

That is a beautiful engine Jeff, you finish work and attention to detail is superb!
I'm sure that it will run great after you get her dialed in.

I decided to add a governor to the Reid engine at little late but I think the engine will look better with a governor even though it does not control the gas .
First this was to add a pulley to the charging side flywheel.

Thanks Bill .
As written the governor is an after thought , I sold this engine and the new owner was surprised that I didn't make the governor to make the project complete ,well I want to keep him happy so I decided to make it for him .My poor health forced the sale , but another item is that this engine is just too heavy to take to shows .

Working on the cooling water tank for the Reid , the tank is aluminum with oak strips to make it look like a wooden tank .I tried an all wood tank but it was a disaster .
The rods are used to secure the wood .

I like that Jeff. To the casual observer it will definitely appear to be an all wood tank. Hoe did you form the metal rings?

Thanks Bill ,
The rods were bent around a piece of scrap steel then threaded 5-40 , it was difficult to get a smooth bend . If I ever do this again I'll use smaller rod , these are too big .
I plan to have 5 bands when finished .Jeff

5 bands installed , now I'll bead blast the lugs , trim the rods and sand ,stain and clear the wood . All in all this worked well.

All the parts for the governor are now finished and fit, ready for finial paint and mounting to the engine . The  dummy glands are made and soldered to the mixer .

Another shot of of the mixer with the linkages installed . A lot of work went into the governor , it would have been worth it if it actually did something .

impressive and beautiful engine !
iron, steel, bronze, painted parts and different woods match perfectly.

could we have some details on the clutch and brake  ?

That's a beautiful engine and it sounds so great. I agree that the choices of materials and paint and the wood look well together.

Add my name to those curious about the clutch, etc.

Thanks for the kind words .
The clutch was modeled after the Sistersville clutch which was used on many engines in oil field service.
I purchased the castings for the clutch and power from Brad Smith , the power is not shown in the video because of lack of shop space .
I feel that the addition of the clutch made the engine look complete .
The scale hot tube was designed by Norm Colby .
I added several details that were not included in the plans far too many to list .
I purchased the remaining stock that Brad had for the clutches last year if anyone is interested in building it let me know .Jeff
