Scroll saw attachment for a lathe
« on: March 26, 2017, 06:56:01 PM »
If you had the desire and need, but not the space for a good scroll saw...would you consider a scroll saw mounted to the tool post of your 9" +    lathe and driven by it?

Many years (decades!) ago, I had a setup like that on a small lathe. It worked well, but the vibration was an issue. Even on dedicated scroll saws, they tend to vibrate like crazy.

Dave...........I haven't thought about a scroll saw, since I already have a nice one. But what I have thought about is a small filing machine driven off of my lathe. I think some of the same principles would apply so will be watching to see where this thread leads.

Unimat had attachments to accomplish this.

It is certainly better than not having a scroll saw, useful for lots of things even metal  work.

1" stroke.   Piercing saw blades.   Mounts onto an AXA tool post, and hangs on a nail when not being used.

Intended for up to .25 brass or aluminum

I have a small Russian lathe that was sold as 'Universal Machine Tool' which came scrollsaw attachment, 4"wood saw attachment (with guard) and grinding wheel. I have only used it as a lathe but might turn the scollsaw into a die filer setup. All up its a wonderful piece of accurate Russian machining.

Perhaps not relevant here, but Millers Falls / Goodell Pratt / Hobbies offered a scroll saw attachment for their small wood lathes. They are still fairly common in the UK:

I believe there are a couple of people offering die filer casting kits.  Martin might be one and there is one in Pennsylvania that offers a bunch of stuff for South Bends.
