Yeah. Routing is all about economics. Not how badly you want it.
Want it bad enough...you have to pay.

The question is what else was on the truck? If you ship less than car load then good routing is to go to where the stuff nearest the door is, at least if it's really heavy. For that kind of shipment, the idea for the logistics program should start with the original packing. Its probable that the highest value order was to Chattanooga, TN with the second highest value being for San Antonio, TX. The driver must have been on mileage, otherwise he or she will soon be out of business. Even on mileage, if there is more than one bidder to the shipping contract these people will soon lose out.
Best business is one that only handles full car loads. Much simpler to route.

I don't think it's quite like that anymore, but at one time if you sent or ordered something that was shipped Fed Ex and it was standard 5 day ground shipping, they would sit on it and deliver it on day 5............even if it was coming from the next town. Want it sooner............then pay more!

Bear in mind that economical routing was not the issue here. It took days longer than promised, and crossed its own path several days apart. I think that they just swarfed up! Anyway, it got here eventually, to North Chili, luckily without going to the simalerly named country way WAY south of here!

Sigh.

Just checked on another package, coming UPS this time. It was one of those services where they give it to the post office for final delivery (don't know why, the UPS truck is on my street every day anyway). The post office sent it from the main facility cross town to my local post office. So far so good. THEY sent it to another town on the other side of the county. Now waiting to see if it comes back....

 :insane:    :ShakeHead:    :paranoia:

I think I should not order anything for a while....

Post office is now saying that the package, currently at the office 15 miles from here, and got there yesterday morning, will take till Monday to get back here.

I know you are not supposed to mess with Mother Nature, but what the heck did I do to PO the Post Office?

I remember a summer job back in college working for an industrial supply firm in Boundbrook, NJ. I rotated around to various jobs and one day I was working in the shipping department and sent out a package via UPS and it ended up going to the company literally across the street. Hey I was a snot nose kid in engineering school and unfamiliar with the local streets...how was I to know. But it was one of many good lessons I learned that summer....another was to stay away from a drink called a "stinger",  knock you on your a$$ in a heartbeat and one heck of a hangover. Ah those were the years :)
