And that brings me to today's status... the parts are all painted, and the display stand is together. The stand in reminiscent of a Monterey Clipper boats, with planked sides and deck, and the characteristic ladder-style rub rails.

Maybe I can get it together by this weekend?

(and a few shots of trial fit-ups).

You can make those gears in the home shop...I'll dig up a reference.

Very nice work on your model Pat, It looks great! I think we chatted at the Names show last April; you were showing Roland Morrison and I some of your lost wax castings?

Attached are some pictures of a Hicks engine that I took at the GEARS show in Portland OR. This engine was completely fabricated except for maybe the flywheel. It is a 1/3 scale of a six horse engine.

Thanks, and yes indeed, that was me showing off the jewelry.
And I recall seeing that engine somewhere online before... lots of work to fabricate parts like that bedplate...

Ah, nice! Reading that bit made quite happy to have paid just $40 for my worm set...   ;D

But in the 2nd pic above (of the 1/3 scale model), you can see that the builder did it the right way, producing a 2:1 ratio set with gears having equal pitch diameter.

And I have the prints for those gears, all the angles spelled out... maybe next time...

Something else which comes from the study of these drawings- just how much the assembled parts were "unique" and non-interchangeable.

On the camshaft assy drawing below, look at the assembly steps... keep in mind that the driving helical gear has already been pinned to the crankshaft in some random position. I assume one sets the crank at TDC or some such... Now build the camshaft assy onto the engine, set the cam positions, and drill for taper pins. THEN take the cams off, case harden them, and reassemble.

Oy.

Update: Actually, the driving gear on the crankshaft is keyed not pinned... but there is no specified relation between the gear teeth and the key! So each installation is unique from the start, and the camshaft is matched to that driving gear.
For service, you'll need to build up a new camshaft assy ...  Luckily, Hicks had a repair shop right close to Fisherman's Wharf...

Hi Pat I just got through your build thread I like the way you approached this build I think if I had been more realistic I would have done something similar, but i am too far down the road I took to change now, I just have to get my confidence back that I can finish it up. I am in the middle of a ship model restoration at the moment and recovering from an emergency appendectomy operation.
Are you going to show us the boat model as well?

Mike

If you can imagine it you can build it

Hello Pat, like Mike I have just been enjoying catching up with this very interesting build log.  Greatly impressed with the way in which you have enrolled all these multiple high tech processes, in which you have experience, in order to approach the model making very differently from the traditional model engineering route. Extremely effective for the purpose to which you intend to put the engine.   Dave

Thanks guys!
And as mentioned in the first post, the whole build is documented over on RC Groups.
No boat yet, this one is just going on display. Here it is "running", with dubbed sound:

I remember that sound.  :) When I was a wee lad and we would go over to the fishing ports on the Oregon Coast, I remember seeing the small double end trollers that had that very sound. Later on most of them converted to Chrysler Crown Marine gas engines.

Nice work.

Yep, that's a beautiful sound!! We still have a couple of those old 'kelpers' here around Port Townsend. Used to be quite a few but most were converted to cruising boats with modern engines....

Ah, Port Townsend... as a soon-to-retire model boater kind of guy, that sounds like a great place to retire to!
