Poppin ic engine
« on: March 18, 2017, 09:03:21 AM »
Hi
Has anyone built this engine in a larger scale than the plan that is availiable on the net. Will there be any problems if I scale it up to twice it's size.

Frank, I don't think size alone would keep you from scaling it up. The Duclos Flame Licker engine is roughly twice the size of the poppin and runs well. Before we get too far down this road though, the Poppin is not an IC engine, rather it is an external combustion engine, or more properly an atmospheric engine. I am sure others will add to the discussion as well on the size consideration.

You had me a bit puzzled too, I don't suppose there is anything to stop someone calling an IC engine Poppin, but yes Poppin is a flame licker, and it should go quite well scaled up.

I have built a slightly larger version. I added 20% to everything. It gave me a 3/4" bore instead of 5/8". It runs great and i am very happy with the finished model. I did add the modified head that traps the valve in aslot it the head rather than the original outside valve. Sorry about the misreperintation and thank you for your responses. The reason for my wanting to build it bigger is that  my fingers have artheritis and after building the Burrell Gold medal tractor I have no wish to be building small.I was thinking of doubling in size. thanks again

Go for it Frank and please do a build log so we can follow your progress. It's a nice design!

Yes, as Bill said, a build log would be great to see.

Frank I think 2x would be sweet.

Steve I like the green paint.  It makes it look more "real".  I might just have to paint mine.
