Jim's Jowitt running
« on: March 05, 2017, 05:36:12 PM »
I have completed the Jowitt poppet valve engine as drawn by Jason and published here 12 months or so ago in, for me, double quick time; I started it just last November.
Some pictures:

My engine is pretty much as designed apart from using materials to hand rather than always as specified and the major change of fabricated flywheels.  I also found a use for a small brass flywheel I have had in my "come in handy box" for years as a pulley.  I found it an interesting build especially the shaping of the cylinder block.
Thanks to Jason for the excellent drawing and build log.

And now a vid:

Very nicely done Jim, even the paint colour matches and a nice job on the fabricated flywheels.

I must get round to writing up the second engine in the 24mm bore series particularly as the third has been test run :embarassed:

Thanks for all the kind comments.

The colour is actually not the Ford Moss Green specified rattle can colour as I couldn't find that in my local Halfords but Ford Highland Green which was available seems close, especially given my poor colour perception and the vagaries of monitor screens.  ErIndoors likes it anyway and it's not often I get approval for a colour choice from that quarter.   :ShakeHead:

Jason. I look forward to the next in the series, especially as I have a spare piston seal available.   ;)

Simon, next up is Stew Hart's Potty Popcorn engine as I haven't got anything really brightly coloured yet and a Popcorn lends itself to a bit of bling I think.

Looks and sounds great Jim  :)

I bought a set of plans to make one off Ebay sometime ago but at the time didn't feel confident enough to tackle it - You've spurred me on to have another look at them and have a go.

That is sweet Jim.  The color suits the engine perfectly.

What a nice looking and running engine, Jim. Very well done.  I love the view looking between the flywheels when it's running.

Peter the ones being touted about on e-bay are copies of the original drawings meant for use with the castings. If you want to do a barstock one then use my drawings which are also free and are also in metric which I think is your prefered system.

Peter
A point worth mentioning is that I believe that when Jason converted his drawings to metric the engine came out slightly bigger than the original and so suitable commercially available flywheels as noted in his build log are available.
I found the drawings easy to follow and there were no errors (that I found, anyway), also Jason's build log on here will help if you need a little guidance.
I would encourage you to give it a go.

Hi

Thanks for the replies, I've had another look at the drawings I bought and yes they are imperial intended for castings. I hadn't thought much more about it till seeing Jims engine running but now I have a tad more experience I'd quite like to have a go at making a metric barstock version.

Jason, are the drawings online for anyone to see ?

Thanks
Peter

See Jason's build log in Engines/your own design/Jowett Mk 11 Poppet Valve Steam Engine, currently on page 3 with the last post dated Sept 2016.  (I tried to post a link but failed miserably  :old: )
The build log has each drawing attached to the posting describing the manufacture of the component.

Peter, its also available here as well as ME forum, drawings can be downloaded from the links to Dropbox in ME or just copy the pdfs from the site below

http://modelengineeringwebsite.com/Jowitt_engine_build.html

http://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=114711&p=1

http://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,5820.0.html

It would be quite easy to scale it back down by letting 1mm = 1/32" and then you could use Stuart 10V/H flywheels or if a glutten for punishment do asI did and also make a mini one by halving my sizes.
