fitting a 3 jaw chuck to a rotary table
« on: February 26, 2017, 11:50:40 AM »
hi

I want to fit a 4" 3 jaw chuck to a 4" rotary table. It looks like the only way is to get a front mounting chuck unless anyone knows of a way to attach a rear mount chuck  :noidea:

Cheers

Rich

Perhaps make something that looks like this:

(with a spigot on the back to register into the bore of the rotary table)

I have just finished solving this problem. I purchased a M14 x 1 adaptor for my 80mm RT and then made a backplate to suit my 3 and 4 jaw SC chucks (and the 4 jaw independent).

I looked at the possibility of making an adaptor with slots where I could slide the T nuts in but they generally interfered with the fixing studs for the chucks. This set up means I can put an M14 x 1 to MT2 adaptor in the lathe and transfer the chucks between the RT and the lathe.
Best regards

Hi

Allen and Roger.

I have one of those Myford adapters which works ok but...............

It raises the height quite a bit, adapter then backplate then chuck.

I had problems with the chuck unscrewing itself when a back and forth operation is used.

I would like to fit a chuck directly to RT if poss.

Cheers

I did also look at making a centering stub for the chuck and then using some very long T nuts that hung outside the rotary table along with normal milling clamps to hold the chuck directly on the rotary table.

If I am doing a job where unscrewing is a risk I am planning to add a clamping screw to the back plate.
Best regards

Hi

Sorry its been so long completing this, other things seem to have taken my interest but now I need to use so needs must

Here's how I did it

2 steel plates 4" dia. 2mm thick. 1 steel plate 10mm thick. All 3 are drilled centrally 8mm

1 of the steel plates has 4 x 8mm slots machined and the other has 3 x 8mm slots machined. The plate with 3 slots has an 8mm nut welded on

All 3 are bolted together through the central hole then 2 more holes are drilled 4mm and fitted with M4 socket head screws and nyloc nuts

3 x 8mm bolts fit the adapter to the chuck

then 4 x 6mm bolts and T nuts fix it to the roary table

Cheers

I understand why you used 2mm sheet to keep the height down but isn't it going to be too flexible?

Hoping to be proved wrong!

I do have a rotary table with three T slots, hence the three jaws chuck can be bolted directly to the RT, with a set of 3 specialy made bolts, with several cross holes in their head to insert an a hardened steel rod for the screwing. In principle the centering is automatic, but I also added a centering peg, which also allows the recovery of tooling fallen in the central hole !
The problem was to mount the 4 jaws chuck...an intermediate 12 mm thick plate was the only way to fix it with my set of bolts.

Simon, I would think that clamping the plates to the chuck and table, which are both rigid, would reduce the tendency for them to flex and there probably isn't a lot of upward force on the chuck to counter anyway.

Hi

Finally before tightening the 7 bolts I have got it running as true as possible, within.002"

It is rock solid.

I have another rotary table which has a 2MT in the centre and takes an adapter for my Myford chuck. This method doe's have some flex in it and I have had the chuck uncscrew

Hi

Having successfully mounted the chuck I have the same problem as I had on my X1 mill

http://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,3797.msg68969.html#msg68969

Very little room between rotary table and drill chuck.

So I have carried out the same mod as the X1.

Fly cut a lump of ally and drill 4 10mm holes

The extra 50mm in height makes a massive difference

Cheers
