.

Time to start cutting some metal.  :)

As advised by Jason I made the main shaft of the crankshaft and the big end first. The metal for the webs is on order.

Called at my mates to liberate him of some en8 for the shaft. But he has only got en16 or 24 so I used the 16. Had to have a little play with it to get it cutting to a reasonable finish. - The spec main dia is 20mm and reducing to 17mm. Also made them a bit longer to enable the fitting of a driving wheel on one side and engagement for a starting handle on the other.

Next onto one of the flywheels. Made a best guesstimate for centering.

Then cutting we did go.!

Little very short video.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23W4GuWxkyc" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23W4GuWxkyc</a>

Bored the hub so a nice snug fit onto the shaft. - I will need to take a trip to my mates to slot the hub for the keyways once both the flywheels are made.

Flipped it over and machined the other face.

Now I just have another flywheel to do this time with a 17mm hole in the hub. - I will make a madrel for final finishing and polishing them later when I have finished dropping and bashing them about during the rest of the build.  >:(

Steph upon seeing the parts arranged below asked. "Oh, you are making a cannon" ............ TBH I can see why she would think such.  ;D

Well that was an interesting video for me.
Reminds me of how little I know of cutting speeds.

Thanks.

I have not posted in quite a while, been too busy supporting the fine doctors at BID hospital in Boston for the last few years.

I will be following this build as I just acquired a full size 1.5 HP Economy a few months ago. Have not had a chance to run it yet.
The photo is a picture of it with my recently completed Little Brother in front of it.

Nick:  It looks like you were right on the size limit for the flywheels on your lathe!  Nice start.

Zee:  Yes, it looks stupid slow but that's what you need.

Bill:  The Little Brother build was pretty straight forward.  I think the trickiest part was getting all the springs just right.

That was a fun video to watch. I haven't ever seen a cutting tool like that before...................but then there's lots of things I haven't seen before, about machining!

Yes It was on the limit. ............... Over actually.!

Boxford call that machine an STS 10 - 20. The 10 denoting the max dia that can be cut. But in reality it could at a push just about cut 11" - That flywheel is 10 1/2"

Thanks for posting that photo of the 'real one' very interesting.

Looks to be decent castings Nick as I can't see any sign of blow holes or other flaws in the machined surfaces.

Should be up and running by Sunday evening at this rate ;)
