Good BA tap and dies
« on: February 19, 2017, 08:23:55 PM »
This is a question for for you guys in the U.K. I'm getting fed up with poor quality Indian and Chinese carbon steel BA taps. Can anyone recommend a good manufacturer of HSS BA taps and dies.

Thanks

Tony

I'm in the UK like Tony and also interested in buying BA and a ME sets shortly so I wondered what other members thought of these Apex sets lower down the page ?

Not used Chronos but I have had both CS & HSS taps and dies from here with no problems:

I mainly  use metric now but I've flagged up the CS BA stuff.

Don't forget the prices. They're ex-vat & PP though if you compare.

I also have some Dormer, Presto & Volkel all OK.

Hello.
I can really recommend the tools these guys are selling.
Almost any kind of taps and dies, except ME threading tools.

I realise this is an old thread but may still be of interest to anyone looking to buy cheapish tap and die sets.

I've just bought one of these ME sets - I didn't want to pay a lot to cut the occasional thread for steam fittings so just opted for the CS version.

I guess for anyone doing a serious amount of thread cutting they'd not be much good but for the odd stuff like I need they seem to do an excellent job  :)

Hi,

I have used Tracy tools on a number of occasions for ME & BA taps/dies, both CS and they have performed well when cutting threads mainly in brass & CI when building engines from Stuart castings. I have also obtained imperial reamers from them. The most useful item has proved to be a set of 'number drills" (1-60) that I find to be indispensable. Have always found the service to be good fast.
