What is it with you? Singles turn into doubles, triples become triplets. You have a serious loaves and fishes thing going on. I am in awe. I hope that one day my closet of castings can pull off the same miracles.

Its called mutual attraction  :embarassed:... I find castings attractive and they like the loving home I can provide them. Here they are not relegated to a dark damp corner, they know that they get to regularly come out of their boxes and will be shown the attention they deserve  :).

No news yet on the latest orphans I am hoping to rehouse, another hour or so I reckon  :-\

I'm sure you will have a comfy nest waiting for them ;)

Is it the basic engine or the full condensing set of parts?

It is currently the basic engine. I may fit the John B mods of the engine lubricator and the improved boiler pump but their previous owner thought he would fit those to his 5A and kept those castings :(

I have been told the Stuart Condensers as designed do not work  :disappointed: and they cost an arm and leg on top of the already not so cheap casting set.

I also think the pumps used a car spare part that was readily available at the the time but hard to get now unless you want to wander around autojumbles.

Also unless you were going to use it in a boat etc they would only really be decoration, though they are not that nice to look at - more function that looks.

It sounds as if you will need mechanical assistance moving some of the pieces around.  :naughty:
Is the all-up weight in the back-breaking category; especially with the twin?
In any event, I think that some of the bigger machines in your stable are going to have some fun.

The finished Swan is only 23.5 Kg so just short of a old bag of spuds ;)

I will have to think of some sort of raising plate for it to clear its flywheel, it is meant to mount of the ribby bits of a boat..   :noidea:.

Someone has used metric threads on the Swan   >:(

Just as I had finished drilling and tapping the sole plate for the 5A 1/4" BSF and mounted up the Swan sole plate I found the "feature", now have to decide if I am going to let it be a Black Swan  :-\

Might be worth checking if the Sawn builder also used metric stock, as it is not supplied with the larger Stuarts they may have gone all metric.

Though worth also checking the thread angle as it could be 0BA rather than M6x1.0

0BA are loose in the threads. M6 are tight.

I only have the desirable  :embarassed: castings for the Swan not the fixings kit.

Following a bit of necessary Tree Surgery I finally made it back in the workshop late this afternoon and decided to prepare the material for the Bearing Caps.

A donated  ;D come in handie was faced off and then the decision had to be made was I willing to machine off 15mm from the stock  :hellno: or could it be saved for prosperity. It is about this point I often get reminded that I still have not brought myself that nice band saw I have been promising myself. At least I now have an aching arm to go with the aching back from playing with that tree  ;)

So ready for tomorrow to make some caps but I might be tempted to finish off the reversing gear on the triples  :noidea:

Holes drilled, then undersides milled to fit the soleplate. Turn it over, mill the profile as a series of steps, and use the boring head to turn the boss round. File to profile.  It would have been much easier and quicker to have used castings for the caps  :-\

Bolt the caps on to the sole plate using some suitable allen screws. I had intended on making the studs but at 1/4" I will be screw cutting them in stainless  ::)

This casting would be ideal to bore on the saddle of the lathe but Tgs has been feeling left out  :( so he has bagged the next step. I used the pilot holes for the oilers to square up the castings and then checked used my engineer's level. He's ready to go  :)
