It's getting close now, thanks for the patience.

Patience? That I got.

But I'm running out of popcorn.

:lolb: :lolb: :lolb: :lolb:, good one Professor. I'll admit though, while enjoying this build the popcorn husk were getting caught between my teeth and I took Jo's advice and swapped to Java cakes and some great red wine from our mates in Australia: no more husks and your surface finishes are much more brilliant  :lolb: ;). Can't wait for you to fire it up

Several years ago I switched to the white popcorn variety, no husks to get stuck in the teeth!

Okay. I guess I have to admit it. It must be me.
Seems like many of my posts just take off on a life of their own.  ;D

But I can't hold all the blame.

At long last its a runner but only after three long evenings and all day today and yesterday. I got it running sort of Friday evening in a sustained fashion but not with enough speed to make the lock out arm engage for the "miss" mode. After making seemingly endless adjustments to the mixer setting, spark advance, timing gear setting and anything else I could think of, I felt like it was a lack of compression. The first modification was to put an o-ring on the piston, made no real difference. It still ran off and on but again with insufficient speed. I was confident that the valves were sealing, I knew that there was spark, and I knew there was fuel getting into the cylinder. So today's idea was to remake the piston, again with a Viton o-ring, but to make it .050 longer than the original in the hope of reducing the volume in the head at TDC. I got that done late this evening and it made a big difference. At the same time, I remade the split bearing for the con-rod and after things ran in a bit I finally got a sustained 2 minute plus run AND the hit an miss mode functioned just as it should have. The mixer needle is ultra sensitive but if all goes well I will be able to replicate the same type of run tomorrow. I haven't been able to start it by hand, using the 12 volt prop starter instead. Maybe more fine tuning and that will be possible, maybe not. But even if it requires the starter , if it will run as it did tonight I will  be happy.  I will get it cleaned up tomorrow and take some final pictures and hopefully make and post up a video as well.

Thanks Jo and gentlemen. Since I am off today (Memorial Day here in the USA), it will get back to it as soon as I take one of the dogs to the vet this morning.

Best of luck with the dog and the Vet trip!
Waiting excitedly for that video!

Kim

PS That would be an engine video, not a Dog-at-the-Vet video. Though if you want to share that one too, I'm sure it would be interesting!

Kim, the dog video might even be more interesting. This is our Lab mix who has a wonderful disposition but suffers from anxiety attacks, especially regarding the vet, so we get everything done on one day once a year assuming he doesn't have any other health issues.  Poor guy was all wobbly but he did get out of the car by himself at least. Heck if I had had two Xanex (sp) and another sedative as well at 6:30 this morning, I would be out for a week.

Final pictures and video coming right up as soon as I can get it uploaded to youtube.

Just a quick update note on the TINY. With some further tweaking and reducing the apartment advance to more like 5 degrees as per George's suggestion, I was able to hand start the engine this morning and keep it running  :pinkelephant:. Maybe running it in some has helped as well. I am now officially happy with it's performance  :whoohoo:
