Bill, hope all is OK with your wife!  Hospital stays are never a fun sounding thing.
Best of luck and hope she is back to normal quickly!

Many thanks guys. Things are returning to normal. I must say it is "enlightening" to deal with the health care system these days  :o.  Fortunately we haven't had to very often.

Sadly I might be finding out how good they are this side of the pond  :(  Weeks of not being able to play in the workshop :paranoia:

Slight change of plans for today. Rather that set up the rotary table I started on the connecting rod instead. After reducing a piece of 3/8" square to the dimensions needed for the con rod (photo 1), I milled one end for the cap (photo2). The cap was made separately and slightly oversized. It was the drilled for clearance for 1-72 hardware and the main part of the con rod was tapped 1-72 and the cap attached (photo3). This allowed the sides to be milled to the same width as the con rod and then the height was reduced (not whole screwed on however), to get to the .288" height of the big end and after re-attaching the whole thing was sanded smooth on the surface plate with some 320 grit paper.

Then it was back to the mil vise to drill the hole in the small end (photo 4) and the large end (photo 5). George's design calls for a split bronze bushing for the big end so I turned a piece of bronze to .001" oversize and reamed it .1875" (photo 6). Back to the mill to reduce the diameter to half before parting off two pieces in the lathe using the Warner .015" grooving tool. (photo 7). In hindsight I probably should have parted these off before milling them to semicircles but with slow shallow cuts it worked out ok this way too.

The split bushing halves were placed into the big end and the cap tightened (which held them in well) and the sides were cleaned up again on the surface plate. Though not shown, the small end was rounded and the middle portion of the con rod turned and slightly tapered. So at the end of all this I have one con rod finished up as shown in the two photos. The SHCS were just long enough to ass a brass nut to the underside. As long as this doesn't interfere with any other parts once assembled I will likely leave the nut there if only for looks though I suppose they might also have some functional value in preventing the SHCS from loosening much like a jam nut. If there is interference I can always shorten the SHCS flush with the bottom of the con rod.

So that the con rod has a place to go, I got a start on the piston as well, turning a piece of aluminum to .001 under the cylinder bore and checked it for a smooth slip fit in the cylinder. More on the piston tomorrow. I am still wanting to use CI rings but how successful that will be remains to be seen. They will be small but I am hopeful it can be done.

Thanks Kim. Given the size of it I was pretty happy with the result.
