Another Tiny IC Engine
« on: February 19, 2017, 01:33:30 AM »
Thanks to Arv's (putputman) original plans and George's (gbritnell) modifications converting the original design to hit and miss, I chose this little engine as a first project for the Cowell's lathe, with help from the Sherline lathe and mill as well. While most of today's progress was on the Cowells, first up was to face the two flywheel blanks and drill and ream the center holes. This was done on the Sherline because subsequent operations will require the rotary table and I have yet to make an adapter for the mating the Cowells chuck to the RT.

The two pictures below are of this and are self explanatory. George's thread can be found here:  http://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,6016.0.html

Next was the cylinder and most of this was done on the Cowells lathe. The blank was faced and turned to the major diameter (photo 1) and then the taper was turned using the compound which went well (photo 2). The pilot hole was drilled 17/64" (photo 3) so that the live center could be used for the following operation, the grooving of the cylinder fins. I ground a small toolbit the proper width and set out cutting the 8 grooves needed (photo 4). The Cowells managed these plunge cuts well and didn't even strain.

With that done I moved the blank over to the 4 jaw on the Sherline lathe, got it running nice and true and the because of the small bore size, I used a solid carbide 3/16" end mill as a boring took to enlarge the hole to .375". (photo 5).  The small hole gage and mic were used to get the size right on the mark (photos 6 & 7).

Continued in the next post....

After parting off, it was back to the Cowells to chuck the cylinder by the small end and face off the large end to the correct length. The nearly finished cylinder is shown in the last photo.

I will get back to the flywheels tomorrow...

Swarf on a brand new Cowells!  Whatever next.

So Bill, has the Cowells met you expectations?

Glad to have you along guys. The real credit here goes to George and Arv. I will try to do justice to their designs.

Vince, at this early stage, I would say yes!! It is still a small lathe, but I knew that going in. What I find exceptional is the silky smoothness of the longitudinal, cross and compound movements and the resulting finishes produced.

Beautiful job Bill.

I hadn't seen a hole gage like that before. Where did you get it?

Good to see you joining the "Tiny" builders club Bill.  You are off to a great start. I have had more fun with "Tiny"s than any other engine I have built.  I have built 18 or 19 (not sure) of them in various configurations.  Ten of them are earning a living in Gauge 1 locomotives, two are in portable displays and two are going into the Hornsby crawlers. Plus a couple of spares.  All are built as Hit & Miss engines.  If you have near as much fun with yours as I do with mine you are in for a great time.

Zee, they are called Small Hole Gages. Look up Starrett No. S 829 E or Google small hole gages.
