The foundry has promised to cast another cylinder next week  :).

Hi Jo.

If it isn't too late? Ask the foundry to drill the core after curing.

It all depends on what they're using as a core material though. The alternative is a perforated metal tube,
" core tube " cut to length and placed in the centre of the core box, the core sand then rammed around it.

Kind regards, Graham.

Confusing isn't it

Have you seen Wayne's recently completed 1:1 Otto & Langen? It is a masterpiece!
When you say drawings are you talking about the Lenez drawings, your own, or maybe that other set that is pretty much a copy of the Lenez drawings?

Yes have seen Wayne's latest and have been acquiring photos  :mischief:

We started by scaling up the Lenez ones now it is time to make the corrections...  :)

We got to the bottom of the problem: The first box was done by the boss and he let the lad do the next two the following monday

They are promising to pour the replacement column on Thursday and in theory my supplier is going to pick it up on Friday but he owes me money so I don't expect to see him for a while   ::)

I've opted for the 1867 No1 version just to be a bit different, those Lenez copies are too common :LittleDevil:

Dave, have a look at Wayne Grennings facebook posts as they show several hundred pics of the build. Think I prefered it in teh bare metal rather than now it is painted.

Thanks Jason

I have followed it from the beginning; quite the project. I don't know, the bare metal is nice but I think that I prefer to see it painted in the classic Otto Deutz brown. :LittleDevil:
At the Coolspring Power Museum where it is going to live for a while, all the bare metal on the engines is slathered in grease to keep the rust at bay. Can you imagine that entire engine being coated in grease?
The building where it will be housed in temp controlled so I'm not completely sure they grease those engines up. The times that I have been there they all seem pretty clean.

So you are doing the flywheel with the oval spokes and the single outer rim then.  :noidea:

Well with the way the casting is done we do have a blank canvas. As the casting won't fit on my lathe the plainer flywheel would actually lend itself to fabrication using a water or laser cut rim and separate spokes.

Not totally decided yet as I quite like the idea of doing a dummy governor like the one on Wayne's. The one in America which is the green one in your photo also has a governor but I don't like the bearing supports on that. Whichever way I decide to go the base is the same and I would rather model an actual engine than one based on etchings and engravings where the artist may have embelished things for the sake of it.

My understanding is the governor on the green engine (now painted brown) was added after it arrived in the US.

You may recall I was boring out the base of the OL. It is finally to bore size, so turn it round, quickly centre it up and do the counter bore. Last bit is to turn the shoulder for it to locate into the base.

This can now go into the casting box as we have proven that the casting is fit for purpose and while I wait for the replacement column to cool down I will return to the other engines in the workshop :cartwheel:

As I only drink one every 3-4 months I don't see anything wrong with having the full fat version :)

It was only a quick phone shot, this one may be a fraction better but you will have to wait until I write it up to get decent photos
