1/4 scale Otto Langen 1866 Engine
« on: February 18, 2017, 05:01:14 PM »
The patterns for this engine are now ready to go to visit the foundry  :embarassed:

So far there is to be only three engine sets: Mine  ;), one set for someone who does not like castings  ::) and of course another for me  :naughty:.

Is anyone else interested...

Hi Robbie,

Until I know how many sets there will be and can get a quote, I am allowing a budget of £300 for each of mine.

The racks will be another possible joint purchase.

Base, column and flywheel. The Jaffa cake  :P is there to provide a size reference.

We opted for the solid flywheel and to machine out the spokes as they are machined all over as it does not cost any more and avoids chilling...

Patterns look good. Put me down for a set. The jaffa cakes brings back memory's.

The jaffa cake challenge. 60 jaffa cakes in under 30 min and 1 pint of water.

The other advantage of the solid flywheel is it enables easier clamping to the face plate (bolt and Tee nut only) and for those of you with smaller  ::) rotary tables it should be easier to clamp down on the table (at least for machining the first side ;) )

So that makes 4 sets.

It should be pointed out that these arte not "finished size castings" but the basic blanks which will need all teh detaiol machining onto them but should still work out cheaper than buying large bits of CI bar.

Also you will not be able to make this on a mini lathe and mini mill, I think I have posted this one before which will also give an idea of scale. Note the patterns here were when someone did not want cores, but you know how ladies change their minds :embarassed:

That pillar would make a great stand for my Sherline. It could never spin it!

Nice looking castings Jo.

I'm curious how you plan on joining the upper and lower sections of the O&L together?

Thanks Zee/Dave.

There are a number of options for joining the two halves together. I am sure all three of the constructors will try a different way  ::).
