Dubious honour
« on: July 20, 2012, 02:54:50 PM »
Hi Guys
I started my new build on this brand new site today and after about 5 minutes I noticed my Karma shoot up to the heady heights of 2  ;D ;D
and then shortly after that I was on negative 2 :'( :'(
I therefore claim the dubious honour of being the first victim of the dreaded Smite attack, or as my friends put it
They needed to try it out on someone  ;D ;D ;D ;D
ummmmmmmmmm guys, is this safe????????

This is why I'm not a big fan of karma....

I don't know who/why I'm afraid. Not sure I can find out either. We could probably machine up a trophy for you though?  ;D

I think I will turn off smiting, if I can work out how. & will discuss with other admins the whole karma thing. I'm more inclined to allow a "thanks for this post" type system.
Cheers,
Ade

my friends were just having a little fun at my expense and it was not meant in any way to be taken seriously ;D
But after the three of us stopped laughing, I got to thinking this could really be abused badly ( we were in a 3 way skype conference at the time and it really was very funny  ;D)
I don't want to ruin Kama for everyone  but its only a matter of time before someone smites someone in earnest
it could get messy!!

 ;D ;D

Pete, the admin already removed the smite option - so Karma will now be back to the way we're used to it

Kind regards, Arnold

Procrastination is nearly the same, but it precludes machining.
Thus, an engine will only be built once the procrastination stops and the machining begins!

Hi Arnold
does that mean I don't get my trophy :'( :'(
Pete ;D
PS
One thing I did not like on TOS was a growing tendency to use Kama as a form of currency.
Personally I felt that went against the spirit of Karma as I saw it

I agree, it's childish. It doesn't really serve any positive purpose.  8)

As a matter of interest what is this karma thing? Is it explained somewhere?

That's very true, and a couple over there were openly touting for Karma points - not the way it should work at all.

Tel, I agree in spite of my being one of the Trolls - I think there needs to be a sticky post on the karma system.

I was on that site for months before I realised what it was and how it worked.

Until this post I didn't even know there was such a thing as a "smite" which also seems against the spirit of things - it certainly would not cross my mind to use it.

I noticed that I tended to get karma points for downloaded plans - but it seemed highly variable, when 200+ people download a set of plans and not a karma point one wonders.

Then I noticed someone else suggesting that a karma point be in order if you used the plans - So I tried that - you yourself "paid" me a point for my Mendocino motor.

If this is against the spirit, I won't do so in future - but I think some guidelines are in order.

As regards it being childish, perhaps, but I found them motivational - particularly in so much as prompting me to do the extra work of producing usable drawings and detailed threads which seem to get the most KP points which to my mind is as it should be.

Regards,
               Ken
