Rupnow Popcorn Engine
« on: March 05, 2017, 08:07:15 PM »
My version of the Potty Popcorn/Rupnow Engine.  Not the easiest build because of the Crosshead Guide.  I cut it out of a 1-1/4" steel dowel bar used in concrete highway construction.  The flywheel is cast iron and the rest is brass, aluminum, and steel bar stock.  I used steel plate for the base in lieu of the aluminum specified because of cost.  Only had to move one hole horizontally 1/64".  It is a really nice running engine.  I ticks along very nicely on 5 psi.  My thanks to Brian Rupnow for graciously providing the plans for this build.

A very good looking engine Rick, it would be nice to see it running.

Rick,
Beautiful work, it's a nice design.  I just asked for, and received, Brians plans (Thanks Brian )

Cheers,
Phil

Very nice.

I'd be interested in knowing how you did the Crosshead Guide.

This is an engine I'm very much interested in.

You mentioned Brian's plans. I also see some plans from Julius.
The engine in Julius' plans looks almost identical (should not be a surprise since it's a popcorn engine) but includes a governor.

Are Brian's plans available in the forum?

Thanks

Well done Rick. Zee---It's been a while since I built my popcorn engine, but I remember doing a lot of work on that cross-head guide with ball nose endmills. If you want a set of the plans just email me and ask for them.----and tip your hat to Stu Hart of the U.K., because that is a copy of his original design.---Brian

Good Job Rick.

I'll post the plans up her when I fire up my other computer, for those who are interested, or alternatively drop me a PM with your email address and I'll email them to you.

Cheers

Hope this little video comes through.  As I said, it is a nice running little engine.  When I finished the machine work and powered it up, it started immediately.  It has about 3 hrs run time and is pretty smooth now.  And yes, my thanks to Stu Hart for building the first one and sharing it.
Rick
