All American Die Filer
« on: February 02, 2017, 06:09:35 PM »
Hi

For those who have one of these I just posted a rebuild with pictures
and drawings for the bearings over on the OWWM site in the
metal working section. If you have never been over there check
out the Vintage Machinery site section for lots of info on old machines.

I attached one of pictures of the finished product.  I have used a die filer for many years.

 Enjoy

 Bob

Nice, I have the exact same one. I was lucky as mine only needed a good cleaning and new bellows for the blower. I got something from McMaster and adapted it for the blower. Great machine, but I wish it ran a tad slower. Thanks for sharing!

PJP, you could put a bigger pulley on the machine, or smaller on motor to reduce the speed, but that's usually a case of getting round to it.

Nicely tuned up Bob, I also have the same machine purchased mine new in 1978, I also need to get some new bellows. The one thing I found interesting on your rebuild blog on OWWM was the comment about the rear wheels. When I got my machine the wheels were at the front, makes it really easy to move around I just lean it forward holding onto the post.

I have had filers for over 25 years.  Most were from flea markets at antique farm shows and few off ebay.
Not sure of a current supplier.

Thanks, I did not know the first two digits indicated the year, mine is 80792.  I see they changed the logo in 81.

I am not sure what you are referring to.  If it is the small wheel on the Auxiliary arm then it seems fine.  My only issue with the machine was that it took
a bit of tweaking to get it flat against the file, but once done it seems OK.

Is this what you are asking?

Bob I am referring to the little wheels on the legs that are used to move the die filer around the shop,You made a red lever to lift the machine to move it because the wheels were at the back legs, the wheels on mine were on the front legs which made moving it easy I just lean the machine forward hold onto the post and wheel it around.

Got it!  I prefer the wheels in the back.  With the magnifier bracket on the column there is no real place to grab it.  Also I am height challenged (ie short guy) so reaching over would not work too well.  Using the handle makes it is easy to move it around and position it, at least for me.  80% of the time it just stays put along a wall.
