Hello to All
« on: January 28, 2017, 02:13:28 AM »
Hello folks.
Well, discovered this forum as I was doing some research. I've made my living with steam over the past 20 some years, so I started thinking, well, might as well make it a hobby too. I'm a mechanical engineer by trade, primarily in the industrial sector. I may be lurking and just reading for a long while, at least until I convince the wife that we really need a lathe and mill. My workshop to date is more geared to woodworking.

On the long term wish list are building a water tube boiler, and a horizontal engine, perhaps with Corliss action. Come back in 10 years and ask me how that's going.

Looking forward to learning a lot from you all.

Welcome to the forum. :hi: Do you have a name that you'd like to go by?

You aren't the first one to show up here with a woodworking background............myself included.

Since you have a woodshop, here's a good engine to get you started: http://www.john-tom.com/ElmersEngines/01_woodBeam.pdf

Here's a YouTube video of one running: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEUbe17b1SY

That is one nice looking unit Flyboy, Greg is the name here, known by Methos in other realms on the great interweb. Kind of slid into this world by watching David Richard's steam powered shop on youtube...Mrpete222, Doubleboost, redryder and others. Probably caught some of this disease from Dan Holohan talking about the Dead Men's Steam school.

Its nice to see that the board is this active. Probably going to have to put down checking this board on my morning routine.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. Like I said earlier, don't even have the toys to start playing yet, but we'll get there.

Does anyone have a spare dog house I can stay in when I buy the lathe?

Central Iowa here Roger. Doesn't look like there's a lot of people around me on the map.
Just south of the town where the Gade engine factory was.

Fix something she needs or make her something (candleabra, etc.) and you'll be good to go. ;D

And no...no spare dog houses here. Get my drift? :lolb:

Well Zee I think you're trying to tell me I'm hosed lol.
I did convince her that we needed to build a hydraulic press similar to This Old Tony's on youtube.

Actually, kind of just forgot to ask, just heard about it when the bill for the metal came in.

Hi Greg,
Welcome aboard there's a great bunch of guys here. I'm not into steam that much yet at least. I do like the Corlis and George Britnell's tiny steam engine. Maybe some day after I get Val done. I as well am not afraid of the brown stuff.

Hi Greg,
Welcome to the "Popcorn" channel..... You'll get it after reading a few threads! Sure you will enjoy being here.

As to the dog box, yep our old fella vacated it a couple of years back & it's still looking for a new home, I haven't had to use it in the last couple of months

As to the hydraulic press, just finished building mine, going to post some pictures when I get the last bits painted, will be interested to see yours when done.

Cheers Kerrin
Get excited and make something!
