Hi

Just before we went away on holiday I started to assemble the regulator but came across a problem.

The central spindle has to have a spring on it to keep the disc pressed against the regulator body face. The drawing clearly shows a nice gap around the spindle

But in practice there is no such gap

I have checked and double checked the drawing and it simply doesn't work, perhaps another Martin Evans error

To overcome the problem I have made another disc but moved the tapped holes out by 1/32". It meant that I had to make another lower part with its tapped holes moved out by 1/32"

Now I have room for the spring

Cheers

It is disconcerting to find these sorts of errors. It makes for a lot of wasted effort.

Hi Mike

That is quite true.

I spent the best part of a very valuable day in the workshop trying to overcome the problem and there is still a little more work to do.

Cheers

Hi

Confident that I have the regulator sorted its time to start assembling things. The regulator body is fixed to the boiler by 2 stainless steel screws. Plenty of thread seal was applied

Followed by the tube that screws into the regulator through the bush in the smoke box, using the tool to screw it in. Thtread seal used again

Followed by the wet head bush which screws into the bush in the smokebox and at the same time screws onto the tube from the regulator, using the tool to screw it in. thread seal used

Then the wet head and super heater

Remember I said I was confident about the regulator. I spoke too soon  :facepalm2:

The regulator inner dome won't fit over the regulator

Strip it all down again. Make a split collet to hold the central bolt and shorten it

Now it fits. Make a gasket and bolt it on

The backhead has its cover fitted. Then the regulator bush, handle, water guage, blower valve, firehole door etc

The rear section of boiler cladding with a couple of brass bands

The cover on the front of the firebox and the cover over the firebox

The front section of boiler cladding with 2 more brass bands

The boiler clack valves fitted, one each side

2 blowdown valves fitted. One each side

The boiler is pushed firmly into the smoke box. A couple of screws, one each side is all that is needed

The following 7 photos are more trial assembly work

Cheers

Rich

Hi

Thanks Mike, John, cnr6400, and Kim

Although I have many of the parts already made they all seem to need fettling to achieve a good fit so its taking time.

Hi

Thanks Roger

I haven't posted much lately but I have been busy with lots of fiddly fettling and modifying etc.

Another bit of tool making which you might be interested in. The blow down valves need a square key to open and close them.

Here's my method of machining a square hole.

Start with a bit of round stainless steel and drill to a depth of about 1/2"

Move over to the mill and machine a slot

Machine a bit of stainless to the same width as the slot

Silver solder in place making sure the square hole is true

Machine away the excess. Cross drill for a T bar handle

Which leaves me with a key with a square hole

Nicely made Rich. Now you can blow the boiler down AND wind the clock!

Hi

Thanks cnr6400

I have moved the lubricator from the front of the running board to underneath the running board on the rear left hand side. In its previous position the linkage was too long and exposed and had already been knocked a few times.

Its mounted on a stainless steel plate. You can also see the much shorter linkage

The bottom connection fitted and a start made on running the 1/8" pipe
