Could be a first angle vs third angle projection thing - Mr Evans occasionally forgot which he was using in the same set of drawings (or maybe other people were doing the drawing on some details).

Hi

Some more assembly work. Fit the piston rings

The piston ring clamp/guide I made won't work will it  If I use it to fit the piston I won't be able to get it off so a slight mod is required, cut a slot in it

Slightly off topic I have modified the lift. it now bolts to the front and rear beams using the buffer mounting holes

The 4 socket head cap screws in each valve rod guide have been replaced and reversed with button head screws to give a little more clearance. The lock nuts on the valve rods were just fouling the nuts.

Things are getting a little stiffer now, mostly caused by the piston rings but it still turns over ok. Once I get it running on air it should bed in

Still following along quietly Rich. Lots of great progress recently which you must be pleased with. These loco builds are just fascinating to me and your build log and pictures are excellent.

Hi

Thanks Chris, Kim, Roger, Carl and Bill

The little crank I made that is the drive for the mechanical lubricator is pinned to the crank pin which once fitted prevents removal of the connecting rod and coupling rod

I decided it would be better to make one that is removable. Drill 2 holes in a bit of steel and slit with a slitting saw and ream

Cross drill tapping size for M2.5. Drill one side clearance for 2.5mm and tap the other side.

Thats better

The coupling that connects the valve rods is slightly out of line on the left hand side

I shall have to make another

Finally for this weekend I have made 4 pins from stainless steel that connect the eccentric rods to the expansion link

Cheers

Rich

Hi

Not a lot to report so far this week.

Made a new valve rod coupling with the tapped holes spaced an extra 1/16"

Fits perfectly

Hi

Thanks Thomas and cnr6400

Well I'm not sure how soon  ::)

Got most of the valve gear assembled today and had a go at the valve timing  :headscratch:

You are not kidding Nick it is a right pain in the *$+%

Way back when I made the eccentrics I could see then there would be a problem and had the foresight to include an extra boss on the inner eccentrics so that I could turn them easily. The outer eccentrics which control the forward movement ahve to have the, for want of a better discription, big end end caps removed to get at the grub screw which is still underneath the other half. I have spent most of the afternoon trying to get just one side right and have given up for today
:wallbang:  :cussing: :ShakeHead: :disappointed:  :facepalm2: :noidea: :old:

Cheers

When you do get the timing right, make a scribe mark across the shaft onto the eccentric. Then, just in case it needs to be disassembled in the future, or if something slips, you can reset it again in one go. I've seen people at a steamup have something slip, and spend a long time readjusting it again.

It is, ah I think I saw one of your eccentric sheaves and thought, that’s far better, you can rotate it and nip it without removing the strap - far easier. So there wasn’t room to do it on all? All of the eccentrics on my 3 1/2” Mabel have the grub screw under the strap, as you say, monumental pain in the #%^*!

You’ll get there though, just need a methodical method of doing it.
