Hi

Thanks Kerrin

I have used a bit of loctite to fix a length of copper pipe into the bypass valve

When fitted into the tank the pipe is visible in the filler hole

I will be able to see and gauge the flow

Cheers

Hi

Thanks Admiral

I'm getting there but there is still a fair bit to do.

I'm taking a slight side step at the moment. The loco is becoming very heavy, too heavy for me to lift. Very soon I will have to get it off the bench and onto the shop floor. Then I have to get it outside. I have about an 8" step down from my shop floor to the slabs outside.

I'm playing about with various ideas ranging from pulley blocks to scissor lifts    :headscratch: so watch this space

Cheers

Rich

One  way I have done lifts of heavy stuff down a couple of steps to outside grade is to use a car engine hoist. Not sure about where you are in the UK, but various firms here will rent them out for a day or two. You might try the local auto parts stores, or local garages. The hoist can stay on the slab and reach inward to lift the locomotive with a sling, or chains, or hard links like you have on your rotisserie rig. Most engine hoists can deal with 700 lb or so safely. Just food for thought.

For my steam shovel, at about 100 pounds, it worked well to use a hand truck (kind used for moving boxes/etc) with large (13" to 14" diameter) inflatable tires, which go up/down steps pretty well. The model is on a wood display base, and I added some cleats to the hand truck to restrain the sides of the base so it could not slide off the sides. Handles at both ends of the base give a easy grip, though it still requires two people to lift. This setup works fine for this weight, for anything a lot heavier then some sort of lift would be needed as CNR says.

I would take html copies of all of your forum pages and when/if you get time you can update the links to another place where you are hosting your photos.

I took to attaching the photos when photosuckit started their charging scam. We also have photo hosting capability on the same server as the forum software http://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,7249.0.html which I normally forget to use

The first step will be to know what you have posted so time to HTML copy the pages...

Hi

Thanks Jo

I have sent a message to Ade asking for the password but have not had a reply as yet.

So a progress, or lack of it, report without pictures

Conway has taken a step back this week. With all the fittings in the boiler and everthing piped up I filled it with water to do a hydraulic test to 1 1/2 times working pressure but could not get any pressure up. Lots of water dripping out of the auto drain cocks which can only mean that pressure is getting by the regulator  :cussing:

I removed the auto drain cocks and blanked them off but then water was coming out of the snifting valve :facepalm2:

I then made 2 blanking plugs. One for the snifting valve pipe and one for the main steam pipe where it connects to the steam T between the cylinders.

This time as the pressure rose another leak appeared :facepalm2:

It was coming from under the cladding around the firebox.

Only one option available, strip the boiler out of the loco again. The good news, if there is any, was the fact that I had the boiler out in under 15 minutes. Both side tanks were off in minutes, remove 2 bolts per tank and a couple of pipes. A few more bolts and the boiler was out. The cladding was stripped off, bungs fitted and hydraulic tested again. The leak was from a stay on the left hand side of the firebox. When the boiler had its initial twice working pressure test at the club it was fine. I have cleaned it up and resoldered around the leaking stay. Needs another test now but might be next weekend.

Cheers

Rich
