Hi

Thanks Chris and Nick

I don't know when I will get back onto it :'(

I'm working this week then there is something called Christmas that will get in the way ::)

I need to have a good few days in the shop on maintenance, drill and tool sharpening etc. I am also midway through fitting a DRO onto the old Myford and some new drawers are long overdue. I think all this will be my goal for the Christmas holidays.

Anyway I would like to wish one and all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year

Cheers

Same holiday wishes to you Rich. Enjoy your time off in the workshop. I plan to be in my shop a good bit of the holiday time too. :whoohoo:

Hi

Thanks cnr6400

Well the tool sharpening got done, the new drawers have been built and fitted and the DRO has been fitted to the Myford.

Do you recall a while back I picked up a part built 0 6 0 Simplex. Well on ebay over the holiday someone advertised a boiler for a Simplex which I duly won :)

So yesterday Julian and I set off for Cheltenham, about a 2 hour drive to pick it up. As far as I can see it has been well made and pretty much as per the plans. All copper and silver soldered. I have had my endescope camera inside and all looks well so happy days. I will take it to our club to let the boiler inspector give it the once over in the new year.

Today was back on conway but not such a happy tale :(

I am still struggling with the valve/eccentric setting. I seem to be able to get 3 of them set up(it doesn't matter which 3) but things get decidely stiff and when the 4th is tightened up it is almost impossible to turn.

So I have stripped the whole lot out again and thrown the towel in for today :disappointed:

Cheers

Rich

PS

Happy new year everyone  :DrinkPint: :wine1:

Sorry to hear your troubles Rich. :(

I'm sure you'll get it sorted, but it can be frustrating trying to work through it.
Best of luck. I'm here rooting for you! :)

And glad to hear your other purchase is looking good! :)

Hi

I have found a problem. The eccentrics are not sitting true on the axle.

You can see from this photo how much they are out

After some deliberation the only thing to do is strip the axle out again

This is going to be a challenge  :headscratch:

Firstly drill the pin out of the crank.

Then hopefully with a bit of heat press the crank and the wheel off.

Looking back at my method of making the eccentrics, (go back to page 21) I can see that the offset hole for the axle should have been bored in the lathe and not drilled and reamed in the mill

Cheers

Ouch! Sorry to hear about that one, hope the rest of the assembly can be re-used!

Yeow! That's a bummer :(
Once you get it apart, what's the plan? Plug the eccentric and re-drill? Or make a new one?

Hi

Thanks Chris and Kim

Happy new year everyone :drinking-41:

I have a few ideas that I am playing around with.

A new set of eccentrics will be needed but this time bore them on the lathe Richard :slap:

I am wondering if I can make all 4 with the external grub screw with new eccentric rods with a greater off set to suit

Cheers

Hi

The first job was to remove the pin from the crank which stubbornly refused to move. I drilled out some of the fat side of the pin

Turned up a punch from some silver steel and then knocked it out

Set up in the press with pressure on the end of the axle and heat applied to the wheel

Then pressure applied again and heat applied to the crank

Going completely off topic for a moment here's the boiler I picked up last week for the Simplex I have

Ok back on topic.

Turn a piece of steel to the flange diameter

Then move to the mill and centre under the quill

Move the table over 1/4" and centre drill

Back in the lathe and centre on the off set point

Firstly drill

Then bore out to size

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDRpEih1eHQ

Carefully with the last few cuts until the test bar fits

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=95t4P7UQd8U

Then test with the axle

Re centre in the lathe

Turn to size and part off

2 down 2 to go

Cheers

Rich

That must be a relief to get them apart in such a way that you can reuse most of the assembly

Nice looking boiler - hope it will be useful without too much trouble ;)

Hi

Thanks Chris. Yes it came apart quite easily , better than I expected

Thanks Admiral. It looks like all the parts are re usable

The boiler looks to have been really well made, I'm happy with it.

All 4 new eccentrics have been made and are a much better fit on the axle and running true. The 2 outer eccentrics, the ones next to the wheels have had their flanges increased in width form 1/16" to just over 1/8". Just enough room for me to get a 1/8" grub screw in. My plan is to use the small 1/8" external grub screws to set the valves. They will be good enough to just nip the eccentrics in place. I can then remove the caps to tighten the main grub screw. The eccentric rod will need to have a slight kink made to take up the extra 1/16" or so.

Thats the plan anyway ::)

I have taken a couple of steps back while its stripped down again to get everything turning as freely as possible.

The wheel has been put back on the axle but not fixed permanently. The axle box fitted, and the crank fitted with just a pin.

I have a couple of lengths of aluminium track so that has been fixed down to a length of MDF
