Hi

Thanks cnr6400 and Terry

Today I took the loco outside and prepared it for firing up on steam. Set it up on the rolling road.

Fill the boiler. Fill the side tanks. Fill the hydrostatic lubricator. Fill the drip feed lubricator. Oil round the axle boxes and motion.

Light a fire.

Hi

Thanks Chris, John, Michael, Per and Terry

Yes it was a good day to see it running on steam. ;D

The lubricator seemed to work well. At the end of the running period I opened the drain valve and out came clear water followed by hot oil

I have got a steam leak in the pipe though which should be an easy fix

Hi

Well Conway is nearing completion. There are a few little jobs that need tinkering with but for the most part its complete.

The next big job is to get it down to our club and have the boiler inspector do the steam test and then hopefully take it for a run around the track.

Unfortunately with circumstances being what they are that may be some time away, possibly towards the end of the year.

So today I have decided to have a clear out and make way for a new project.

I have a bench full of bits for Conway that are now surplus to requirements. Some are duplicated parts, some are parts that have been upgraded or modified etc. The following video is a brief description

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4QuR_U2UVs

Its a shame to just dump it all so I would like to offer it all free to anybody that fancies building this loco. It would of course have to be collection only due to the size and weight or arrange your own courier

Cheers

Rich

Splendid :praise2: :praise2: :wine1:

I hope you don't have to wait too long for your club to reopen.
Best regards

Hello fellow lock downers and lock downesses I trust you are all coping with the extra shed time

Well our club is still shut so I can't take Conway for its steam test.

I have repaired a few niggling leaks etc

So today I had her outside for a steam up, just to keep things turning over.

I have a question for you my learned friends

The loco runs on steam ok as the above video shows but to coin a phrase it literally runs out of steam. After 30 seconds or so the fire has almost burnt out, the pressure drops to around 25psi. I have to feed it with wood to get the fire going again and once up to pressure it will run again for 25/30 seconds or so and then run out of steam again. I can't feed the fire fast enough or keep it hot enough to keep it going.

Any ideas :headscratch:

Cheers

Rich

From what you say about the fire and lack of steam, I would look at the blast nozzle size if the blast doesn't keep the fire going your engine is not going to make steam, a small diameter nozzle bore will pull the fire, a large diameter bore will not pull the fire, but you have to hit a bore size that will pull the fire and also be manageable it's trial and error until you get the right size to suit your engine.
Have you tried running with the blower open, if that works then it's the blast nozzle at fault.
Mike.

Hi Mike

Perhaps I should have written a little more information.

The blast nozzle works fine. Once I have the boiler up to 30psi I can remove the electric blower from the chimney and use the loco's own steam blower. The pressure rises quite quickly to 80psi, its running pressure, and will maintain that pressure. Put it in forward gear and open the regulator the loco runs but its then that it runs out of steam and has all but eaten the fire in 30 seconds

Cheers

Rich
