A PAIR OF 5'' GAUGE ELECTRIC LOCO'S
« on: May 21, 2023, 06:49:11 PM »
Hi

I haven't posted much in recent months, just the odd comment, but that's not to say I haven't been busy.

Along with my good mate and fellow model engineer Julian (Alias Barney Dog on this forum) we have built a pair of 5 '' gauge electric loco's. They have been a great success especially with our grand daughters who love driving them and the younger members at our club, The Leicester society of model engineers. Whenever we take them there is a queue of eager young volunteers willing to help. Today, Sunday, was a nice sunny day so along to the club we went.

Here are a few photo's. The blue one is mine and the green one is Julians.

Cheers

Rich

Terrific! Reminds me of the days we spent at Ruislip Lido. We always made a beeline for the trains.

Are they battery powered?

Hi

One day we mentioned it to Andrew our Club Chairman that we were thinking of building a couple of electric locos for our grand kids but as yet had not settled on how to build them. This hobby is becoming expensive and out of reach for some interested youngsters. Our illustrious chairman is keen to encourage new members to the hobby so asked if, while we were at it, we could draw up plans for a simple loco. He asked if it could be aimed at the novice and be built for under £500.00! It would also have to be capable of being built in the club workshop using the available machines and in 5'' gauge so that it could run on the raised and ground level tracks at our Club.

We also write some articles for Engineering in Miniature magazine and the editor said he would be interested if we wrote it up. Part one has just been published.

Cheers

Rich

To keep the construction simple we opted for a chain drive
