A question for Jo.... Is this a Stuart???
« on: December 14, 2016, 07:08:22 AM »
The write-up claims this guy made this engine from scratch, including the castings. But then the seller points out the wax still on the castings..... :hellno:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-vintage-triple-expansion-steam-engine-custom-made-by-G-H-Sommerman-/371813664868?hash=item5691d24864:g:6TsAAOSwA3dYULNc

The engine looks just like the Stuart in all I'm familiar with.
I think someone is having one on... but then I'm not as familiar with these triples as you are...

Yes that is a Stuart Triple but with a spoked flywheel rather than the smaller solid Marine type.

Edit: There are no balance weights on the crankshaft, which probably accounts for the need of the larger flywheel.

Silly price. They could have one of my Triples for that money  :naughty:

Possibly cast the aluminium sub-base himself and that "wax" looks more like glue residue from where some lagging may have been stuck to the cylinder flanges

It is 100% from Stuart castings.  Even if it was made from lost was molds, any residue wax would have burned off from the molten iron, and certainly wouldn't remain on any machined surfaces.

Looks like the seller has taken down the listing.

"...because there was an error in the listing."

Yep, more than one! I would like to believe that the seller was not intentionally trying to gig anyone, but rather was 'passing along' what he had been told (or wanted to believe he had been told) about the item. Unless sellers of this sort of item are known to the hobby I see them as 'estate vultures' looking for that big find.

I don't know who told them it was worth that much :lolb: they might get half more likely a third of what they were asking.

We'll see if it shows up again... I don't go looking for these anomalies but they do stick out when scanning the listings.

Thanks for looking,

Having bought a triple kit, I've been slowly modeling the parts in SolidWorks.  So it was clearly the same model to my eyes.  Probably run on steam at some point as it has cylinder cocks.
