sherline large diameter turning
« on: December 12, 2016, 01:00:59 AM »
Had to come with up with a way to turn a large diameter ring for my motorcycle headlight. Even with the head stock riser the piece would not fit. I solved the problem by turning the head stock by 90 degrees which gave more than enough room. This method will allow me to turn the OD on a 10 inch diameter piece.

I love "outside of the box" thinking.  Good deal.

Several years ago I finished the flywheels for my PM Research Drilling engine the same way. They finished to 6.5 OD. I thought the Sherline lathe with risers would allow too much flex for turning them , but with  using a sharp tool and slow feed they turned out OK. Glad to see yours did also.
