New Member in Texas
« on: November 02, 2016, 01:37:01 PM »
Hello to the group!  I have recently registered, and have been lurking, mostly in the background, so far.  I must say, the quality of craftsmanship I've seen in the threads here is nothing short of amazing.  So far, I've been able to make my way through the Pacific Gas engine thread, and about half-way through Jo's Triple Orphan thread, and they just want me to slink off into a corner and hide...  But I've already learned an amazing amount.

I've been a member of the Houston Area Live Steamers for over 20 years, and have worked on 7 1/2" gauge locos, have several sets of castings and plans for 3/4" scale locos squirreled away for later, and mostly have been running Gauge 1 locos for the past decade or so.  I've built a number of stationary engines from castings, Tiny Power and Power Model Research kits.  I started on Ray HasBrouck's largest twin launch engine, as I really wanted a steam boat, but it quickly exposed the limitations of my worn-out 12" lathe, which I have since sold off to someone that needed it more than I.

Recently, I spent the weekend at a friend's house on Toledo Bend Reservoir up in East Texas, and he has water on two sides of his house, which got me thinking again about steamboats, so here I am.  It's time to dust off the tools, and finish a couple of long-neglected steam tug models, get some steam powerplants in them, and get them in the water.  I have a complete steam plant for one of them, which I am currently rehabilitating, but the second will need me to build an engine and boiler.

So anyway, I'll be around, watching where I can, contributing where I can, and starting a small two-cylinder compound for the second tug.

 :hi: Tom,

We would love to see some pictures of your engines  :)

and the castings  :slap:

about half-way through Jo's Triple Orphan thread, and they just want me to slink off into a corner and hide...

I know that feeling  :paranoia:

Welcome Tom!!  Your should fit right in here. As I'm sure you know there are several current threads on steam launch and other ship projects going on. Which Tiny Power models have you build. I have also build a few and have the Ajax casting still aging.  As far as I know the company is still active but you seldom hear much about their models since the ownership changed several years back. Will look forward to your contributions and participation in the forum.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome.

The attached image is the only engine I have here at work, it sits here on my desk so that folks can ask questions like, "What's that?" or "You made that? What do you mean?"  It's a PMR Model 3B, I believe.

Achim, I have family over in your area -- my mother's parents were from Bavaria.  Surnames Bauer and Wieser.
