Bruce's Rupnow Engine Build
« on: November 01, 2016, 07:58:13 AM »
Well after a number of weeks of waiting for the MT2 reamer from the UK to fix up my mill spindle (Thanks Arc Euro for Fedex backup) I have finally started making swarf again.

The weeks were productive though with all of Brian's drawings redrawn in metric.

So today I made a con rod

Measure twice - cut once the saying goes

The "practice" version was profiled in 10mm aluminium

Then I got the mill working on the real piece

The final version all cut out

And with some bushes fitted

This engine is a lot smaller than it looks.

Thanks Brian for the design and the drawings

Cheers
Bruce

Hi Bruce--I am thrilled to see you on board with my engine. Yours will be the fourth build that I am following. It is a great engine, and you will probably get many requests for the plans in metric. Good luck,--Brian rupnow

Yeah right

Need to get some CI and a few blocks of ali first

A little more done

Crank web and con rod, pin and retainer done.

Also cut a big block of expensive ali (7075 - I think) down for the frame and cylinder mount. That took quite some time.

Thanks for looking in

Things have been a bit busy of late but I have made some progress.

The big chunk of Ali has been sized and then shaped

I need to get a long reach end mill to hog out the gap in the frame so I thought I would move on to the cylinder

After cleaning up the Cast iron and turning to size I decided to cut the fins before boring the cylinder out

After drilling out to 18mm I got to start using my new 12mm Boring Bar - It worked well - ran out of time so have only got to 21mm.

I am away for until the middle of next week so I may not get too much more done until then.

Cheers

Nice work Bruce! Will you make the HVMES meeting this week?

Thanks James

As you will have seen, no I wasn't at the meeting. My wife is heading down to Kaikoura early tomorrow morning to provide support with work so I decided to stay home with her.

I did get a little machining done though.

Major machining on the cylinder all done. Just need to set it up on the mill to drill and tap all the holes

Workshop night - Wife is away for 6 days with work so I got to do a far bit of swarf making tonight

Mounted the 3 jaw on the mill (poor man's rotary table - not a big deal with CNC) and centred the cylinder and drilled and tapped the holes on both ends

Then I chucked up a piece of tooling ali in the 4 jaw and started the piston.

Part way through though I found that the carriage on my lathe was lifting. So I stripped the cross slide off and skimmed a bit of the carriage gibs to remove the play. Much nicer

Here is the piston ready for some milling and drilling operations tomorrow night.

"Well the best laid plans of mice and men"

My plan was to spend heaps of time in the WS due to the boss being away. But work has got in the way to a certain extent.

But I got a bit done this evening.

Got the piston all set up to drill the wrist pin hole and then turn 90 deg and machined the slot and grub screw hole.

Then machined the wrist pin and fitted it all together

It is starting to look a bit like an engine  :whoohoo:

Nice stuff, Bruce. that was a good plan, leaving the square shank in place in order to get the internal slot at 90 degrees to the wrist pin hole.---brian

Hi everyone

Made a start of the cylinder mount last night with milling the block to size

Tonight I hogged out the cylinder recess

Making lots of Christmas decoration in the process

Then I contoured the end

And finally drilled the mounting holes

I am quite please with how it turned out so far

Cheers

Hi Bruce, like the idea of turning the piston from square.
Was up in Wellington last week, came home to Canterbury on Thursday, and hoped to get a view of the coast on the way south (Jet Star), cloud all the way.  A week or so and the road Chch to Kaikoura should be open to one lane traffic.

Hi Bruce, can you post a link for which engine this is?

I did a quick search and found lots of Brian's engines but can't figure out which one this is.

Had a ball in the workshop for over the last week but only a small bit of progress on the engine

Got the Rocker arm and pivot sorted

I got a pair of dial gauges for Christmas and the plan was to make a tramming tool for the mill.

And then I thought "Where am I going to store it?"

Trimmed up a chunk of cedar and turned it into this

I have been working on the JAG Carb

What a fiddly little beast it is

First attempt was binned due to square stock not being centred correctly on lathe

Second attempt has almost been binned due to metric conversion errors but hopefully all will be well (should have moved the Air bleed screw away from the centre bore a bit more)

Here is a pic of yesterday and today's efforts

Just the Spray bar assembly to go but I am away down south for a week so this is it for this year.

Hope everyone has a great New Year celebration.

May there be much swarf and model making for you each in the New Year.

Stay safe everyone

Cheers
