Wohlhaupter UPA 1 boring head
« on: October 29, 2016, 09:40:52 AM »
Hi everybody, there was a very early Santa Claus visit last week.
By luck I have found a classified advertising about an used Wohlhaupter UPA 1 with MT 2 shank.
This is a very rare opportunity, because Wohlhaupter does not make the UPA1 or 2 anymore.
The travelling distance of this type is about 20 mm and the maximum diameter to machine is recommended by Wohlhaupter with 100 mm.
At this small type of Wohlhaupter boring heads the shank is part of the entire construction, so not possible to change.
It was located in a village 70 km from my home, so after calling the guy we agreed a spontaneous appointment to view with the result that the wooden box with the magic content followed me home.
After a bath with WD40 and some additional cleaning it is ready to be used now.
I am very happy about this find because I have started to look for such a  boring head 3 years ago.
A set of Chinese boring bars with 8 mm shank was available in UK.
Kind Regards
Achim

Nice score! Beware the Chinese brazed carbide boring bars for the dreaded 'way off center' syndrome which renders them essentially useless as-is. I can dig up a link that talks about this if you are unclear. Nothing that green wheel or diamond can't fix, but juts making you aware.

Personally I'm sold re-purposing the (also Chinese) boring bar insert cutters like you have in the head. The shanks are so inexpensive & insert prices reducing all the time, lop it off to chosen length & away you go.
