Sphinx gas engine.
« on: October 28, 2016, 04:36:29 PM »
Hello all.

I have attached a video of my Sphinx engine that I designed and built 31 years ago.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pxNlFMT24I" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pxNlFMT24I</a>

There were many small changes made to her over the years like Hot tube ignition from HT spark and the final exhaust valve extension to prevent bending.

It has a bore of 39 mm and a stroke of 2 inches. Metric bore to suit Honda piston and rings that were first fitted.    We have all been novices........  ;)

The " Star " wheel is borrowed from Horace Robinsons 1890 patent for his " Oblique " engine. I half scaled his 1894 patent epicyclic gear that followed from it.

I hope you enjoy the video? Feel free to ask.

Kind regards, Graham.

Quick Jason another horizontal Hit and Miss engine you need to put on you build list. I am sure Graham won't mind if you paint it red   :naughty:

Hi Jo.

I think Jason would make a better job of a build too. I like Red.....

Most of that engine was machined on a little Tyzack lathe that Vincent loaned to me. The bed was machined for me by AWR engineering services. Alex W Rouse became my engineering mentor for quite a few years.....

That engine was the steepest learning curve ever.

Kind regards, Graham.

Well I have not done one with the star wheel arrangement and don't have a blue engine in my collection so.....

Nice engine Graham and the fact it stopped part way through was good as the star wheel can be seen in its simple elegance
