Smithdoor,

Consider one of these.....a lot less work, and one less machine.

A lot will depend on how you index you lathe spindle, but that is cover ad nauseam elsewhere.

I built this one for my Logan, but I think it's going to go live on the southbend in the future.

The plans for this one called for 7/8 shafting.   No where near stiff enough.   I'd go 1 1/8" in future.

Yes it's lever feed....and I use it primarily for key slots  but for small pitches, it would cut an internal gear.

Thought I'd chime in on this one. I've got a few ideas in mind, You might call it my bucket list. I would like to build a straight 8, a flat head V8 based loosley on a Lycoming from a Cord. I've always liked the single sleeve valve engine and have been pondering a flat twin based on Bristol Hercules or Aquila idea. Last is an inline 4 based on an Austin Healey Sprite 1275 motor. One of the last two is most likely to happen. Although I did buy a long chunk of aluminum with the straight 8 in mind. For the 1275 Sprite motor I'd have to borrow one to model from my boss.

Hydraulic would be over kill    a geared drive would be sufficient.   gear it down and drive it with a crank  you're only taking light cuts anyway....

For a very simple solution to cutting small gears and splines, you couldn't have an easier arrangement than this set up of converting the ordinary lathe top slide, Myford in my case, to make a quite robust lever driven slotting slide. Any sort of convenient tool holder could be arranged to fit in or substitute for the usual tool holding device.  Dave

I like that!    You do have to move the compound, and take the compound screw out, but it IS much more rugged.

I looking at Hydraulic as more compact mounting to a lathe or mill
The gear type takes a large motor I have look at using drill motor still very large
A hydraulic pump can set on the floor with just a cylinder on the shaper/stotter
I am still look at always of making a shaper

Thank for your help
Dave
