Flyboy Jim's Elmer's #43
« on: October 15, 2016, 07:53:27 PM »
Here's the completed pictures and video of my Elmer's #43.  :)

I'm able to run it with a little less than 2 psi after I got it broke in. Also, I discovered that I'm able to run it by just blowing into the air inlet tube.

What a fun project this was. I've learned a lot as well as continuing to develop my machining skills.

The flywheel has a little more runout than I'd like, but I think a lot of that may be coming from using 3/16 rod for the crankshaft instead of drill rod or turning down a larger diameter piece. In fact, looking at the overhead video, I can even see runout on the crankshaft. Oh well.......lesson learned.

Here's the link to my build thread for this engine: http://www.modelenginemaker.com/index.php/topic,6181.0.html

Awesome!  Nice and smooth, runs at a nice slow speed, very well done!

The eccentric/valve linkage on that engine is very unusual, looks great.

I like it too, it looks a well made piece and with the nice polished finish it's a great model.

The eccentric mechanism and see through valve chest make it interesting to watch  :)

Beautifully done Jim!  Very nice little engine there.  I love the slow, smooth motion.  And the plexi-steam chest cover.  Very nice touches!

You should show us a video of it with the reversing lever flipped, and it running the other way!  :naughty:

Great work there Jim!

Congratulations Jim on getting your third engine up and running.  Still working on my third one.

Excellent Jim!! What a nice smooth runner too. If you can run it on breath power then it's obviously well built too  :praise2: The valve action is especially interesting on this Elmer design.

That looks nice and it runs well. I'm glad it didn't fight you like mine did.

Thanks for the kudos guys. Makes me want to get started on the next project...............whatever that's going to be. Gotta get a couple of non-machining projects done first. Then there's a couple of tool improvement projects to do, as well.

Kim.... I'll try to do a video of the reversing mechanism in action soon. It works quite well!

Nicely done Jim!
I was looking at your build log and at first thought you'd stolen pictures of mine.
That thought lasted less than a second when it became obvious yours is so much better.

Have that window into the valve is pretty neat, no?

Have you decided your next project?

[EDIT] Oops. Man am I out of date. Sorry.  :-[

Excellent Jim!  Elmer would be very proud!  I know I am, and the videos are superb too!  I think that I am going to build myself one, and my decision is based on seeing your post and videos!  Karl in MI.

Thanks Zee and Karl,

Karl, It's great to hear that my build thread has inspired others.  I know that build threads, that others have done, have certainly helped me.

This engine was a fun build. I'm impressed with how well it runs. I can run it with breath power.

Jim
