Expanding mandrels
« on: October 12, 2016, 07:20:22 PM »
Had a new idea for expanding mandrels.
I have some expanding mandrels and they are very handy sometimes.
The down site is that they are quite expensive when you have the need off a  big range off diameters.
Some days ago I have seen at an action site a set off expanding mandrels to expand exhaust pipes.
The range was from 29 to 87mm and only cost € 16,00 at the action.
I have bought this set and have tested the accuracy off the clamping in the lath.
It seems that the smallest mandrel spindle not completely strait but the mandrels are very simple so I make a new spindle who is completely strait.
They are very cheap and simple.
Maybe others can use this idea.

Picture one the mandrel set.
Picture two the original mandrel.
Picture three mandrel parts.
Picture four Small cylinder in the lath with the mandrel.

 8) Very simple, Probably doesn't hold as accurate as the expensive mandrel but more than adequate for most of the time.
