Here's a picture of my "Crueby inspired" dial indicator holder that mounts on the back of my cross slide. Also showed is my "Marv inspired pump center. Both are very useful and work great. I normally don't use the pump center to center stock in the 4 jaw, preferring instead to just work directly on the stock. It's being used in this case to set up the offset for turning the eccentric for my Elmer's #43. Using two chuck wrenches lets me center the stock quite fast.

Just one more nuance, Jim.  Make yourself an elephant-foot tip for the DI.

Yes, paint them pink.  Machine grey is so passé these days.

Will do. But, what is an elephants foot tip?

Don't know about the zoological name, but here's something like what I use.

Tim has the idea of it.  It's a large-diameter (compared to a typical DI tip) tip with a flat face.  Such a design ensures that the tip is always riding on the most outboard surface of the work, thus eliminating the need to precisely align the tip vertically.

If you make your own shoot for a diameter of 3/8" or so.

Just FYI for those interested,

For another take on indicator mounting, Abom79 posted a modification on YouTube not too long ago:

(“Shop Talk 6: Center Cutting Endmills, Indicator Mounting, Noga Mini-Cool, Floor Mats”)

The segment to watch is from 3:50 to 6:30
