Brass Ball drill & Tap fixture
« on: April 25, 2018, 07:13:41 PM »
Here is the Brass Ball holding fixture I use for drilling and tapping balls for my Flyball governor project. Used a 1 inch dia. CRS drilled & tapped 4 1/4x20 holes to use the brass holding screws and locking nuts to secure the ball in place. Holding hole was made with a 1/2" ball end mill going .050 to .070 inches beyond center to keep the ball in place during D&T operations. I know many do it with the lathe chuck that has hardened steel jaws that will scar the brass ball with just a little overtightening and you may have the opportunity to fish the ball out of the chuck innards, your brass magnet would be very use full in this situation! Even with brass holding screws you can overtighten and scar the finely finished brass balls, use just enough to prevent turning in the fixture. Saw some interesting pre tapped brass balls at the NAME show this last weekend but they were tapped larger than i wanted for my project.
