drill bit drawer...
« on: August 14, 2016, 03:42:31 PM »
... a summer time fun.
Everything works fine until the moment when the 3 mm VHM cutter came loose in the collet of the Discounter (ALDI) Dremel.
Immediately it will be drawn into the wood, deeper and deeper until the ugly noise of the crack could be heard.
The possible speed for the feed with these tiny cutters is amazing, but to much is to much.
It was my only one, so the last insert has to wait until the parcel with new ones will arrive next week.
But the first impression of the drawer seems to be good.

Kind Regards
Achim

Absolutely beautiful!
Too nice to use. Is the engraving done freehand?
Best,
Stan

Hi Stan, everything was made with the help of CNC/CAM (Vectric Vcarve) milling and engraving.
The only problem is the size of my little CNC mill with 290 mm in X an 100 mm in Y, so some tricky multiple set ups are necessary to get the pockets with more than 100 mm length and one insert is 520 mm in the width.

Kind Regards

Very nice, I have to make one too...
I use a sheet of corrugated cardboard to stop the drill bits to roll when pulling the drawer, effective only with smaller size !

Thanks everybody for the friendly words.

Final insert is done, drill bits now in and some empty pockets appear, some more drill bits to buy.

Beautifully done.
Can you please show a bit more of how the drawers are built as well ?

Hi Gerrit, nothing special was used.
https://www.amazon.com/Prime-Line-Products-7210-Drawer-Tracks/dp/B00E8AF0P8/ref=sr_1_2?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1472578903&sr=1-2&keywords=drawer+runners
These type of drawer runners from a local DIY store, some plywood as a baseplate of the drawer and the 3 milled and engraved inserts with the pockets for the drill bits.
Kind Regards

Vielen dank, that is elegant industrial design!! I am trying to sort out my growing collection of drills, reamers and milling cutters. I love the drawer design, will be implementing some soon.

If you have not a special drawer yet then you could also use some Lista grooved trays

I got me a lista cabinet a while ago (they are expensive though :o ) but their drawer accessories are not too expensive and really versatile and useful!
So guess what I did with all my milling cutters:

But of course Achims soultion is very nice too!  :)

Cheers Florian

I added Lista trays to the drawer of an antique post office stamp cabinet. I need to order some more and do a few more of the drawers.
