Sorry guys and especially Stan. Dave Otto notified me that the thread had been locked. There was no reason to lock the thread as far as I know and I may have even been the culprit but if so, did so without even knowing it. At any rate I have unlocked it, and looking forward to more discussion of Stan's new toy!!

My apologies Stan.

With the oven wired, the cement board protecting the wall and ceramic tile under the oven, it’s time to heat up some metal.

On my way to get the cement board, I made a Harbor Fright stop.
A pair of 16” long nose pliers.

I turned a center punch from W1 drill rod, cleaned it and sealed it in a SS foil bag. (double folded).

Following the Bryson book, A program was set up. Up to 1200º F and a 5 minute hold (stress relief) then 1650º (20 minute soak). Quench in 10% brine solution then two tempering cycles at 300º (part cooled to room temp after each.

The hardness files tell me its between RC 55 and RC 60.

Best,
Stan

That stainless foil is pricy last time I looked.  Is it reusable?

I am very jealous Stan.  I wish that I could afford one.  Congratulations on a very useful purchase.  It will allow you to make some pretty trick tooling.

The envelopes aren't too bad, price-wise. The foil is very expensive. Neither are reusable.
However, from what I've been reading on knife forums(great source for heat treating info) and the Bryson book, many are moving away from the foil for anti-scale coatings.
The most usable seems to be this.

http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/metal-prep-coloring/heat-treating-accessories/anti-scale-coating-prod23076.aspx

On small parts, the jar should last a long time. Just heat the part to 150-200° and dunk it in the coating. Allow to completely dry then heat treat as normal.

I'm thinking about form tools, single-lip drills and odd-size single-lip reamers (the Deckel's speciality) and, a major annoyance, transfer punches that are either just a tiny bit too big or too small. I'm going to make a set for my most used clearance hole sizes.

The personal size pizzas look as if they'll fit nicely. Does McMaster carry them?

Stan

Stan,
The oven is one of my mid-term goals. I went on amazon and bought the Bryson book. In the mean time my friend can heat treat stuff for me. I've had a cup of coffee with you and you brew a mean cup. But sometimes you have to pick your battles. :old: Do I spend the time making shrimp and sausage jambalaya, or throw a pizza in the (heat treating) oven. :mischief:
