OK...so where's the blade fixture referred to on the shipping box?  Some knife making in your future perhaps

No knife making. The bits will go into SS envelopes which are then triple-fold sealed. The rack allows 6or so envelopes to stand on edge. More even heating than flat on the oven floor.
After reading Wm Bryson's excellent heat treating book, I'm amazed that the heat-to-sort-of-this-color works. (Actually it's only case hardening because the soak  time at the narrow temp range isn't close to long enough)

Stan

I built one a little while ago.

I suspect yours cost less if I pay myself minimum wage. But it is handy.

I've wondered before, if you put parts in SS packets for heating how do you quench them? I'd guess the air would be a good insulator preventing quench. I've used a coating powder that keeps the scale down. I'll be interested to hear of your experience.

You may convince me to purchase another book. Did you find it useful for practical use?  Someone mentioned an App "Heat Treater's Guide Companion" for use on Android, or was that you? Haven't downloaded yet but sounds useful.

Great addition to the shop. I don't use mine often but find it very useful when needed.

Thanks.

Hugh

Nice oven! I had considered a build but didn't need another project.
As for the Bryson book, it's very practical. Many are primarily metallurgy. This is what works, what doesn't and why.

Stan

Ceramics! He's going to make ashtrays!
You'll make a lot of kids happy.

Oh. No. Not anymore. Not a lot of call these days for ashtrays.

Ceramic tool bit holders! Yeah, that's it. Forget that 3D printing stuff.

Actually there are metal content clay modelling materials where the clay parts burn off, leaving a metal part. I forget the brand name, place like Rio Grande jewelry supplier has it. Could be whole new direction for making fancy engine blocks!

It's called Metal Clay. Comes in bronze, copper, aluminum, steel, and precious metals as well.
About 90% metal with an organic binder. The binder burns away and the metal fuses. There is about a 15% shrinkage.
Very interesting stuff. Lots on YouTube.

Stan
