new toy for the workshop
« on: July 10, 2016, 08:18:44 PM »
well its taken me a few months to organise the transportation but iv finally got my 'new' mill in my workshop!

not quite sure where i'll fit it, but i'm sure i can find a space somewhere.

first it needs a good clean and rewiring, iv got an inverter around somewhere that should be up to the task of powering the motor.
one day ill finish a project before starting another!

That should handle the fiddly bits.
What is it?

Plenty if space there. That will make a nice addition too.

Looks like a capable machine; where is the Y axis hand crank? I my buddy had an Induma Italian made mill that had the Y axis screw down the side of the knee rather then the center like a Bridgeport style machine. Is that the what this one is?

A very useful addition.........I wish I could find space  for a proper mill.     (I've had to whisper that in case the little Raglan heard me and sulked )...................Terry

yes it should be a capable machine - once iv worked out how to use it!

its an Elliott Milmor 16 speed. think its 1965 vintage but not quite sure of exact model and year. need to get in touch with Tony from Lathes.co.uk for a manual and more details.

the y axis crank ?? thats got me  a bit puzzled too, i think its the small handle on the right of the knee, but its missing the cranked handle. and i cant shift it, must be that bit though as its on the end of the screw and has the graduations. the knee is the dial on the left with a splined shaft for the handle.

ill grab some more photo's in a bit - am heading out to gut the electrics ready for the inverter

well didnt get too much done this evening other then gutting out all the 'extra' bits of wiring ( e stops and braking system) and then doing some testing to see how the 2 speed motor is wired.

i did manage to get a few more pics of the dials and bits so i can start to work out how its supposed to work
y axis 'handle'  and speed selectors for powerd x

theres a speed selector for the quill feed next to amissing handle ( assume this is the manual feed) theres also a little lever for disnaging the manual/powerd feed and allowing the use of a lever on the other side of the head

iv also discovered this 'hole' which i assume is where the shaft for rotating the head should be?  iv already got it to nod and to swivel on the column so cant think what else it would be for. no idea why it is missing though? broken? spare for another machine? to stop ppl messing up the tram?

overall i think its in reasonable condition, just missing a few handles. hopefully once i get it moving i wont find its completely worn out

also the original colour seems to have been gold/bronze

Looks like a Cincinnati.    I worked for them..( Cincinnati Milacron) ..many many moons ago.  At their grinder division.   Heald Machine.

Ran one of those once in our "White Slip" area.....a one off model shop within the building....

When did you last buy some?  I got some 3 weeks ago and it ain't the same ...   :'(

Used to clean my hob a treat but this new stuff doesn't.

I fear it's gone the same way as Nitromors, Jeyes Fluid etc.

Environmentally Friendly to the extent of being  :censored: useless ...  :cussing:

If you're state side, try "Simple Green".....it's a bit pungent, but I've had very good luck with it stripping everything, especially if it's mixed 50/50 with hot water in a bucket.   Just drop the piece in and put the lid on and come back the next day......bare clean metal.

well im getting there bit by bit

have heavily modified the wiring so as to run off of 240V  :zap: just need to sort out a few capacitors for the power feed and coolant pump  and she will be ready to run :)
have decided to wire the 2 speed 415 motor on the lower 1.5 HP setting as my inverter is only rated for 2HP - i did work fine on 2.5HP but it wasn't likely to last long especially powered on single phase. can still get max speed out of her by ramping up the inverter so all is good.

still need to decided where to put it though, infront of the door probably isnt the best place  :facepalm2:
