Small indexing head upgrade and fit out.
« on: June 08, 2016, 01:07:27 AM »
OK...so I have this wonderful little indexing head came into my possession....as some of you are aware.

Thought I'd post some of the work I'll be doing to bring her into the fold....so to speak.

This includes

New spindle.   ID     3C collet     OD    1 1/2-8 spindle nose identically matching my South Bend 9 lathe

Alter the  body to have the T slot tongue fit my Clausing 8520 mill

Build a tailstock to match the headstock.   This will be a fabricated "durabar" bar stock iron body and will copy the "Duclos" design in everything but the center height, which will match the indexing head.

Why?

I want to be able to use my 3C collet collection...quite ponderous....and be able to swap chucks from my Southbend into the mill
The indexing head by itself will be able to be gripped in the vise for more simplistic jobs like cutting hexes ect.

The other major use I see for it is crank shaft roughing in the mill with the crank shaft held between centers.

I'll need a 3C center with drive as well......

I ordered stock for the spindles....I have a ton of bar stock iron sitting around...so I'll get crackin on it shortly.

The 2" and 5/8" 1144SP round bars have shown up!    The 2" is big enough to get a Wallaby Crank out of as well!...

This weekend perhaps....

OK Mr. Dividing Head.
I've been trying to figure out what this is and how it would be used. It came with my new dividing head. I think that it's some apparatus for dividing between centers given that the dead center is a perfect fit.
HELP!

Stan

Hi Stan,

To me it seems you have got the carrier right. Just a grub screw (set screw) to clamp carrier to centre. My guess is that the four square objects with countersunk holes are tenons to locate the dividing head in a milling table T-slot. Nice piece of equipment, I recently made an indexer based on a Mini Lathe spindle.

Got a start on roughing down the 2" stock to size.    It has to come down to 1.4995....so I have a way to go there, and then it needs to be drilled 5/8 through  6 3/8 deep...it'll be from both ends....

Then the spindle nose of my lathe will be duplicated, and the bore opened to 3C collet dimensions.

the  old spindle came out once I removed the 3 dowel pins holding eh index drum on.....it's a real simple device that's for sure....

Now we're talking. It looks like the old gal still has the touch . Are you going to single point or use a tap for the internal threads?  Tell everybody hey.

The spindle nose threads will be single pointed.    1 1/2 -8      SB's spindle nose thread has a major diameter of 1.496, and a register diameter of 1.510"

All the inside diameters will be bored to size.

Bored and reamed the internal    That's the back of the spindle.

Then put between center and finished the OD of the spindle.

Nailed the diameter....within about .0004"        Now we flip it, and put the front in the steady rest and grab the rear in the 4 jaw with some soft metal packing and cut the spindle nose 1 1/2 -8 thread and the 3C collet internal.   Then I'll set up and put the anti rotation pin in and be done.

Maybe Im just out of practice, but it took an hour to get that shaft to not runout at the chuck and not crank at the far end.....PITA!....but it's done....on with the machining of the front!

While I make some lunch, I ordered up a 12" long piece of 3/4" OD x .120" wall DOM tubing for the draw bar.    No need to hog out solid stock for this even if it is short.

Ill need a knob on the end, so I figured I'd copy the ER32 collet chuck nut dimensions so I don't need anther wrench.

Major work being planed to clean and reshuffle the shop this week too...

Wellll runout it's awesome.....the thread didn't come out so nice, but it works just fine and the chuck register is perfect so I'm leaving it be

I see this being a very useful tool for a lot of things.   I have a small faceplate with a 3C shank.   about 4"    Perfect for lots of small parts...    I put a reamed hole dead on center for a locating pin.   I see this lathe/mill tooling combo as being a useful addition!..

Got a piece of DOM tubing and am half way into threading the end for a 3C collet.   Additionally, I found a 3C to 1MT adapter with a faceplate at an engine show.    Perfect for this application.

I think I'm going to turn the 1 1/2 - 8 threads off.   The center height isn't really high enough to take advantage of the lathe chucks...

Draw bar is threaded, and I've started on a knurled knob to tighten it.   In that vain I have made the knob some what hollow to install a roller thrust bearing.   I hate wrenches.

Let me finish it up and I'll post..

I never finished this post....so I did it today!

Should work great!   I have a 3C shank 3 jaw chuck.  Eventually I'll get a 4jaw as well.

It has a tongue on the base that will need to be narrowed to fit my table...but I intend this piece to be used in the vise most of the time.
