AOG's version of the Liney Thimble.
« on: May 20, 2016, 04:28:49 PM »
This will probably be the shortest MEM build on record. There isn't much to the engine. I started with the sub base. I turned the outside of sub base to size and added some decorative grooves to the face.

Then I drilled a 4-40 clearance hole.

Next I used a round over mill as a form tool to round over the edges.

The stand off was made from a left over piece of brass. It was faced on both sides and drilled for a 4-40 clearance hole.

With that finished I started on the cylinder assembly.

First I drilled and reamed the bore using my four jaw chuck.

Then the part was flipped and turned round.

I then cut some decorative fins into the cylinder.

Next it was over to the mill where I drilled the hole for the bearing and the mounting hole.

The waste was then milled out.

Next it was fileing button time to round over the frame.

That leaves us with this.

The flywheel was next. I cleaned up a scrap of steel bar into a flywheel blank and center drilled it.

Then the blank was put on the rotary table and centered up under the spindle.

Next the decorative holes were drilled.

The following  piece was the shaft. One end was turned to a press fit into the flywheel and the other end was turned to fit the bearing.

Then the bearing end was drilled and threaded.

Next the crank disk was turned to size and center drilled.

Then it was over to the mill where the hole for the crank pin was drilled.

After parting off, the crank pin was pressed in

Then it was time for the piston. The profile was turned.

Then it was taken over to the mill and the end was drilled. And parted off. Notice my improvised machinist's jack. I really  need to get some real ones.

The last piece was the base. I started with an off cut of corian that I drilled a hole in.

Then it was turned round. In hindsight I should have clipped the corners because those interrupted cuts sucked.

Then I used a ball mill as a form tool to profile the edge.

That leaves us with this family shot.

This weekend's task is to solder the bearing tube to the frame and blue the steel parts. Then I need to find a 4-40 screw long enough to mount the base. Hopefully it will run.

Till next time

Tony

Great job Tony, you will have it running in no time!  Nice touch with the corian base too

Thanks Bill getting it running turned out to be more painful than I thought it was going to be. I had a heck of a time finding a 4-40 by 1.5 inch screw anywhere in the local area. Nobody seems to stock anything smaller than a number 6 screw. I had to drive into the next state to find one. The other problem I has was with the piston falling out of the cylinder at the end of the power stroke. I checked all of my dimensions and I'm within tolerance. I suspect that when I soldered in the bearing I put it in at a slight angle. I think that screwed up the geometry of the engine. In the end I found a simple solution to the problem. I put a flat washer under the head of the mounting screw. The edge of the washer acts as a retaining lip to keep the piston from popping out. Pics and a video of the completed engine can be found here:

Nice job.

I think that engine's also known as 'the rocker' which quite a few people did on the old forum.

I like how you did the cylinder area as well as the base.

You may be able to run it on lung power. I can mine but only for a little while and if in good health (i.e. sober).

Zee it's basically the same engine.
